CHRISTMAS IN HAWAII?
SUN, SAND, SURF & SAVIOR
It's Never The Same Without Snow
I don't know about people who grew up here. Or anywhere warm and sunny in the wintertime. Do they know what Christmas is? No sleigh- bells, no sleds, no skating on frozen ponds. No snowmen, no crunching through the snow to Grandma's house, no snowball fights. No hot chocolate, no warm milk with candy canes, no chestnuts roasting on an open fire. No corny, commercial Victorian Christmas crap at all. Maybe they're lucky.
I suppose Christmas is whatever it was as a child, for you. Somebody posted something somewhere today about going out into the groves to pick citrus on Christmas Day, in Florida, long ago. In Hawaii this morning, it's chow fun and char siu and fresh mango's and choke poi at Tutu's. In southern California, it's just another day on the freeway. Maybe a guy in a Santa hat cuts you off and flips you the bird, for a change. And you shoot him, as usual; only to wound him, today. It's Christmas, after all.
No snow, no Christmas, for me. I don't care about the weather in Bethlehem. What do they know about Christmas? They're the people in the BACKGROUND in the manger scene. No, little Jesus H. Christ would have wanted snow for Xmas. It's a miracle.
Suddenly, the grey, filthy old world is sugar- coated: Pure and white and clean and fresh and sweet and delicious as a world- sized vanilla- frosted cake, without a single finger of icing yet gone. For two seconds in the early early Christmas morning as you look out the icey windows the whole world is changed magically into something beautiful and special, just for the holiday.
Faithful evergreens hold the snow in their arms like precious children, and wide white blankets warm the earth in all directions. The cold crisp air stings your lungs as you run outside to ruin everything, as kids do, making tracks everywhere, muddying up the snow to make snow- forts and frozen projectiles, and somehow have fun while freezing wet and bitterly cold. You're so alive as a child you don't even notice. It's Christmas. It's snowing. It's fun.
