HATE IN THE ALOHA STATE

.
AN ANNIVERSARY OF RACISM & "REVERSE-RACISM"

YOUTUBE: BROTHER NOLAND
"MR. SAN CHO LEE"
A musical compendium of Hawaii racism. A very popular song here in Honolulu. Prejudice sells.

RACISM IS RACISM, NO MATTER THE SOURCE, NO MATTER THE EXCUSE

Hawaii's Hypocritical Stance On Racial Violence

On the fiftieth anniversary of Hawaii's accession to Statehood, there were no official celebrations. It was feared that there would be violence, as there has been in the past. The fact that the perpetrators are a tiny and well-known minority of a minority has not led to any action by local law enforcement. This in itself is an indictment of the entire State: Deliberate official ignorance, avoidance and denial of frequent hate crimes is as bad or worse than the crimes themselves.

The centralized State school system tolerates and even allows the promotion of an annual "Kill Haole Day," when white students, "haole's," are physically and verbally attacked right inside of the public schools. Black students, or "popolo's," have also been subject to racial attacks, even including a school-sponsored and managed yearbook that featured pictures of black students with racist defacements and captions. The yearbook was edited & published by the school authorities with the racist material included. This has happened at least three times in the last ten years alone.

The fact that the State has been run almost exclusively by a local Japanese elite (who are in effect a minority within the largest minority in a population consisting entirely of minorities) for over fifty years now does nothing to ameliorate or share the collective guilt foisted upon innocent Caucasian children and adults for wrongs done, and continuing to be done, against the Native Hawaiian population. The exclusionary local elite Japanese-run State government has engineered programs since 1959 which have increasingly marginalized and hurt the health and well-being of Native Hawaiians, even as local elite Japanese politicians pander to "Local" hate-groups by blaming everything, including their own actions, on "da fahkin' howlees." Using whites as scapegoats helps to turn the attention away from the dominant local elite Japanese politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen & women and their deliberate and racist acts against the Native Hawaiians as well as "haole's" and others.

As long as Caucasians can be blamed for every problem, the local Japanese elite and their toadies in business & government can go on lining their own pockets at the expense of everyone else. As long as racism is the predominant political force here in the "Aloha State," nothing will ever change, and the problems of all the people of Hawaii, including "Locals" (local self-description of local but not Hawaiian non-white & [mainly] non-Asians) as well as Native Hawaiians.

The anemic local Republican Party and their owners & operators on the Mainland have tried to import their traditional conservative tactics of racial divide and conquer to Hawaii. The result has been a net loss for the Republicans, and a ratcheting-up of "Local" anti-white racism. The historical memory of the Overthrow, the Republic, the Annexation, the Territory, the white Ascendancy and Statehood, all Republican-engineered, will never dim as long as corporate racist Republicans from the Mainland continue trying to use Hawaii to fan flames of racial hatred and disharmony everywhere.

The despicable acts of the Republicans do not, however, excuse Hawaii's own racists. Divide and conquer along racial lines may have worked well for the local Democrats, but it is hurting the State in the long run. With an education system on a par with that of Mississippi, and a poverty-driven healthcare crisis that hits brown-skinned people hardest, only by uniting all ethnic groups can our reverse-Dixiecrats ever manage to lift Hawaii out of its' plantation-days cultural and economic slums.

SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER: INTELLIGENCE REPORT
"Prejudice in Paradise: Hawaii Has a Racism Problem"
You'll never hear this here. It could get you lynched.
' With no known hate groups and a much-trumpeted spirit of aloha or tolerance, few people outside Hawaii realize the state has a racism issue. One reason: The tourism-dependent state barely acknowledges hate crimes. That makes it hard to know how often racial violence is directed at Caucasians, who comprise about 25% of the ethnically diverse state's 1.3 million residents. Those who identify themselves as Native Hawaiian — most residents are of mixed race — account for nearly 20%. Hawaii has collected hate crimes data since 2002 (most states began doing so a decade earlier). In the first six years, the state reported only 12 hate crimes, and half of those were in 2006. (All other things being equal, the state would be expected to have more than 800 such crimes annually, given the size of its population, according to a federal government study of hate crimes.) There was anti-white bias in eight of those incidents. But that doesn't begin to reflect the extent of racial rancor directed at non-Native Hawaiians in the Aloha State, especially in schools. "Here in Hawaii, there is no compulsion to speak out on racist attacks. There are all these hate crimes and violent things happening to white people and you don't hear sovereignty activists speaking out against it," says Conklin, who manages a massive website on Hawaiian issues. "The violence has been going on for years and it's always been hush-hush." '

USA TODAY
"Racial tensions are simmering in Hawaii's melting pot"
The world knows what Hawaii will not acknowledge.
' The current controversies are exposing racial tensions below the surface of a tropical paradise that Gov. Linda Lingle says is "a model for the world" in diversity and peaceful integration. Simmering divisions pit Hawaiians against other groups, and "locals" of all races against newcomers including immigrants and military members. At issue now is whether Hawaii will acknowledge and overcome these threats to its friendly reputation. Racial troubles in the islands usually don't get much public discussion. In a tourism-dependent state, talk about tensions is "like news about shark attacks," says Jon Van Dyke, a University of Hawaii law professor. "People are afraid they might lose customers." '

HONOLULU STAR BULLETIN
"Isles shape Obama’s racial identity "
It's even hard out here for a POTUS.
' White added in an e-mail interview that despite whatever "hapa street cred" Obama has in Hawaii, it doesn't displace the prejudice blacks find here. "Being of African descent is not valued in the same way that other ethnic backgrounds are valued here. In spite of the many positive aspects of multiethnic, multiracial and multicultural interaction in Hawaii, we still have to realize ... that being black continues to be negatively perceived in Hawaii," White said. In a 1999 essay written for Punahou's school alumni magazine, Obama recalls how his first perceptions of Hawaii as being "the world's mythical melting pot" changed that by the time he graduated from Punahou, his consciousness of race was much sharper. "As an African American teenager in a school with few African Americans, I probably questioned my identify a bit harder than most," Obama wrote. "As a kid from a broken home and family of relatively modest means, I nursed more resentments than my circumstances justified and didn't always channel those resentments in particularly constructive ways." '

HONOLULU STAR BULLETIN
"Waianae High recalls yearbooks containing racial slur"
Once is an accident. Three times is a policy.
' Hundreds of Waianae High School yearbooks are being recalled to replace a page with a photograph of what school officials call a "racially offensive" word spelled out in cards held by five students in the senior class on football field bleachers. The photograph, with the racial N-word slur, was overlooked during a review of the publication, state education officials said. State education spokeswoman Sandra Goya said the recall because of a racially insensitive photograph was a first at Waianae High, but similar problems have occurred at a couple of other public schools. Stickers were placed over a racially offensive caption in a yearbook at Kalaheo High School in 1997 and a racially offensive photograph at Castle High School in 1998, Goya said. '

FOX NEWS
"Hawaii Served as Melting Pot, Source of Racial Tension for Young Obama"
This was not at a public school This was at an "elite" private school here in Honolulu. This is the place that schools our elite. Is it any wonder that they have a problem coming to terms with racism, especially their own?
' Obama's experience in Hawaii is echoed by other blacks, including some of his schoolmates, and challenges the state's vaunted image of racial harmony. "A big joke amongst the brothers was you could be anything else but a brother and have free rein of the world in Hawaii," said Rik Smith, a black former schoolmate of Obama's at Punahou, an elite private school in Honolulu. "When it comes to people of color, black people, there's a huge amount of racism." In his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," Obama, who is half black and half white, recalled a seventh grader calling him a "coon" and a tennis pro who joked that his color might rub off. One person wanted to touch his hair, and he was asked whether his father, a native of Kenya, ate people. An assistant basketball coach used a racial epithet in referring to black players. '

"Hate crime not ruled out in Waikele assault"
Racism is so pervasive here that even prosecutors can't recognize an obvious hate crime. Especially not when they have political ambitions that require "Local" support. Carlisle is now running for Mayor of Honolulu.
' As debate continued over the assault on an Army couple in the parking lot of a Waikele shopping center, city Prosecutor Peter Carlisle yesterday said he had not ruled out handling the case as a hate crime. The assault remains under investigation, and the charges are up for evaluation, Carlisle said. Carlisle met with Andrew Dussell, a 26-year-old soldier, and his wife after they were allegedly beaten in the parking lot of the shopping center Feb. 19. The pair asked that their privacy be respected, and Andrew Dussell is under orders from the Army not to speak out about the case, Carlisle said. Both Andrew Dussell, who has served two tours of duty in Iraq, and his wife, Dawn Dussell, a 23-year-old nursing student at Hawai'i Pacific University, suffered broken noses, concussions and facial fractures. A police affidavit filed in court said the attack occurred after the Dussells' car collided with a vehicle while trying to pull into a parking stall. Gerald D. Paakaula, 44, and his son were arrested in connection with the assault. The father has been charged with second-degree assault; the son's case is being handled by the Family Court in confidential proceedings. The affidavit said the son was "extremely angry that his vehicle had been struck." "He began yelling obscenities toward Andrew Dussell, calling him a 'f------ haole' while kicking his driver side door," the document said. Paakaula was released after posting $20,000 bail. The police affidavit did not allege that he made any racial remarks. Much of the public debate was touched off by comments from two University of Hawai'i at Manoa professors. Jonathan Okamura, an ethnic studies professor, said he believed the alleged beating occurred or escalated as a result of racial considerations, based on the uttering of the phrase "f------ haole." But Jonathan Osorio, chairman of the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, said the case should not be classified as a hate crime and that Hawaiians should not be painted with a broad brush as a result of the incident. UH professors contacted yesterday said that while many residents see Hawai'i as a land of aloha, racial tension does exist. Many wondered if the public outcry would have been greater if a Hawaiian couple had been beaten by Caucasians, and suggested that such a circumstance would more likely have resulted in prosecutors charging the attackers with a hate crime. Carlisle said in response that race is relevant to an assault case only if it can be proven that a person selected a victim based on that person's race. '

"Obama born in Hawaii = not a natural born U.S. citizen? "
Yes, the Baltic precedents always rule, here. What would Latvia do, that is ALWAYS the question we Americans must ask ourselves.
' Ponder this, from the U.S. Constitution: No person except a natural born citizen [...] shall be eligible to the office of Presiden. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. If you consider the history and believe that Hawaii is not legally a part of the United States, as many do, then one might ask, is Obama a natural born citizen of the United States? One could even make the argument that being born in Hawaii, he's a Hawaiian national! I believe the most compelling legal analysis based on Hawaiian kingdom and international law and precedent, is that the Hawaiian national population today is comprised of descendants of Hawaiian subjects and those foreigners who were born in the Hawaiian Islands prior to 1898. But it is a gray area that obviously hasn't been tested. In looking at the Baltic states as what I believe is the most apt comparison, Latvia and Estonia adopted this approach, with only descendants of citizens and persons born in the country prior to the occupation being citizens, while Lithuania adopted a more inclusive approach, providing those born in the country subsequent to the occupation with the option of citizenship as well. Could Obama have the option of becoming a Hawaiian national at some point in the future as the transition unfolds? '

"Hawaii’s fallen warriors"
The Hawaii Medal Of Honor: Aloha for the koa.
' Lawmakers will pay tribute to service members who have died in the past year by awarding the Hawaii Medal of Honor. Since the medal was conceived in 2005, lawmakers have awarded 120 medals in 2007 and 67 last year to surviving spouses and family members. Takai, in a House floor speech earlier this month, said, "It has almost been five years since the war on terrorism began. While there continues to be much debate for and against this war, there is no debate about the tremendous sacrifices made by our service members and their families." He added, "In the past five years, the war against terrorism has changed our world and our lives in a profound way. Ultimately, it's not about politics, it's not about money and it's not even about winning. It's all about the families and their loved ones and what these brave men and women sacrificed to our country." Among the 19 families who will be present Tuesday will be Regina and Fabian Gagalac, whose son, Sgt. Alexander Gagalac, would have celebrated his 29th birthday on Friday. Gagalac was killed Sept. 9, 2007, just weeks before he was to return home. He died in Al Hawijah, Iraq, from injuries sustained from a rocket-propelled grenade while on a combat patrol. Gagalac, a Leilehua High School graduate, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. He was serving his second combat tour in Iraq when he was killed. On Good Friday, nearly three dozen of the Gagalac family and the mother's side of the family gathered at his Punchbowl grave site to celebrate his birthday and that of this twin brother, Alexis. Both brothers were in Iraq at the same time in 2004 -- Alexander with the 25th Division and Alexis with the 1st Stryker Combat Brigade, sent from Fort Lewis, Wash. Alexis Gagalac left the Army and re-enlisted into the Hawaii Army National Guard and was assigned to Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 299th Cavalry. Regina Gagalac said the last time she saw her son Alexander was when he was home on leave last year and celebrated his 28th birthday. The death of his twin brother has also deeply affected Alexis Gagalac, who has left the Hawaii Army National Guard and will transfer to the Hawaii Air National Guard. He visits his brother's grave site every day, carefully tending to it as he did on Friday when he removed a small American flag because it was tattered and replaced it with a newer one. '

Francis is still the only Chinese-American ever to have won the Congressional Medal of Honor: Salute Capt. Wai.

Rank and organization: Captain, U.S. Army, Headquarters, 34th Infantry. Place and date: Leyte, Philippine Islands, 20 October 1944. Born: 14 April 1917, Honolulu, Hawaii. Entered service at: Honolulu, Hawaii.
Citation:
Captain Francis B. Wai distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action, on 20 October 1944, in Leyte, Philippine Islands. Captain Wai landed at Red Beach, Leyte, in the face of accurate, concentrated enemy fire from gun positions advantageously located in a palm grove bounded by submerged rice paddies. Finding the first four waves of American soldiers leaderless, disorganized, and pinned down on the open beach, he immediately assumed command. Issuing clear and concise orders, and disregarding heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire, he began to move inland through the rice paddies without cover. The men, inspired by his cool demeanor and heroic example, rose from their positions and followed him. During the advance, Captain Wai repeatedly determined the locations of enemy strong points by deliberately exposing himself to draw their fire. In leading an assault upon the last remaining Japanese pillbox in the area, he was killed by its occupants. Captain Wai's courageous, aggressive leadership inspired the men, even after his death, to advance and destroy the enemy. His intrepid and determined efforts were largely responsible for the rapidity with which the initial beachhead was secured. Captain Wai's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army.

Citation:
Pfc. Pililaau, a member of Company C, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and outstanding courage above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. The enemy sent wave after wave of fanatical troops against his platoon which held a key terrain feature on "Heartbreak Ridge." Valiantly defending its position, the unit repulsed each attack until ammunition became practically exhausted and it was ordered to withdraw to a new position. Voluntarily remaining behind to cover the withdrawal, Pfc. Pililaau fired his automatic weapon into the ranks of the assailants, threw all his grenades and, with ammunition exhausted, closed with the foe in hand-to-hand combat, courageously fighting with his trench knife and bare fists until finally overcome and mortally wounded. When the position was subsequently retaken, more than 40 enemy dead were counted in the area he had so valiantly defended. His heroic devotion to duty, indomitable fighting spirit, and gallant self-sacrifice reflect the highest credit upon himself, the infantry, and the U.S. Army. '

At that moment, a violent explosion tore a hole in the roof and stunned the occupants of the room. Cpl. Kawamura jumped to his feet, secured his weapon and, as he ran toward the door to return the enemy fire, he observed that another explosive charge had been thrown through the hole in the roof to the floor. He immediately realized that 2 stunned fellow soldiers were in great peril and shouted a warning. Although in a position to escape, Cpl. Kawamura unhesitatingly wheeled around and threw himself on the charge. In completely disregarding his safety, Cpl. Kawamura prevented serious injury or death to several members of his unit. The extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by Cpl. Kawamura are in the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army. '

The Spirits Of Ancient Polynesia Were Abroad Tonight In Old Honolulu

While most people of Hawaiian ancestry today may not wish to renounce their citizenship in the United States of America, not many Local people celebrated Hawaii's golden anniversary of Statehood either, this week in Hawaii. Admissions Day is a State holiday but it is usually marked only by a few US flag-waving right-wing haole's, a perfunctory official press release, and varying degrees of drama from some of the wackier splinters of the tiny sovereignty community. This year, there were actual dramas at the Iolani Palace, former prison, never home, to the last Hawaiian monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, composer of the unofficial anthem, "Aloha Oe."

Instead of a violent take-over of the Palace, like last year, or a racist rumble on the Iolani grounds like two years before, historical dramas were staged by activists today at the downtown Honolulu site. Men and women in period clothing, circa 1890, narrated, spieled and re-enacted scenes from the last days of the fledgling Kingdom, a British creation less than a hundred years old at the time of the Overthrow. The only drama was the play-acting, and there were no disturbances this year. A small crowd of mixed ethnicity listened respectfully to each set-piece as the Sun gradually fell in the West and the Moon rose in the East.

"Iolani Palace to remain quiet as Hawaii observes 50th"
This was a quiet year at the Palace.
' Sandra Reyes strolled across the empty grounds of 'Iolani Palace this week and fully understood why state officials are not marking 50 years of Hawai'i statehood today with any kind of celebration. "I can see why they would be afraid," said Reyes, who lives in Makaha. "You have to understand the history of Hawai'i." Some Native Hawaiian groups asked that 'Iolani Palace — the seat of Hawaiian royalty and the center of Hawai'i's statehood celebration 50 years ago — be draped in black today as a way to mark the continuing struggles of Native Hawaiians, said Kippen de Alba Chu, executive director of 'Iolani Palace and chairman of the Statehood Commission charged with commemorating 50 years of Island statehood. Outside the palace grounds, the commission has helped organize educational walking tours of the sites of historic events in Island history, as well as a conference to discuss what Hawai'i could look like 50 years in the future. Palace officials and state sheriff's deputies, however, are prepared for the possibility of protests around 'Iolani Palace today and — perhaps — yet another attempt to occupy the palace grounds, as groups have done in the past. But the only official event scheduled today at 'Iolani Palace is not even considered part of Hawai'i's statehood commemoration. Eighteen chanters each will offer an oli, or chant, intended as a gift to Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawai'i's last reigning monarch who was exiled to her palace bedroom following the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom. "Palace takeover"
Last Admissions Day, 2008, clownish thugs disgraced the sovereignty movement, disrespected Hawaiian history, culture & customs.
' A native Hawaiian sovereignty group briefly took control of the grounds of Iolani Palace last night, leading to the arrest of at least 22 protesters. Palace officials closed the historic site "until further notice" to assess any possible damage. About 25 members of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Nation, with its self-proclaimed king Akahi Nui, began locking the gates at about 5:30 p.m. One palace employee was allegedly assaulted at the palace gates. The takeover occurred on the Statehood Day holiday, which commemorates Hawaii becoming a state. It was the second time since late April that a Hawaiian sovereignty group took over the grounds of the historic site. '

HAWAII REPORTER
"Children Threatened by Anti-American Protestors at Hawaii's Statehood Celebration"
August, 2006: Here's the other nuts' take on this, an actual & notorious incident, but provoked by a racist clique of politically-motivated Mainland-funded professional white Republican aggrievants, three years ago. No excuse for the crackheads' behavior, nor for the lack of police protection.
' However, 47 years later on the day the state observes “Admissions Day” with a state and county holiday, there was a very different scene at Iolani Palace. There was complete lawlessness wielded by a pack of snarling gangsters who called themselves native Hawaiian protestors. They ranted irrationally about their hatred toward America and its citizens. State Sen. Sam Slom, a Republican who also heads the small business advocacy group, Small Business Hawaii, organized a 47th annual statehood celebration at the Iolani Palace grounds and invited everyone in the state to participate. He remembers the time before the Capitol was built that legislative business was conducted at Iolani Palace, so for historical accuracy, he planned to hold celebration there. Slom and other attendees said they were excited because this was the first celebration in 6 years - and the last statehood event was held in California because then Gov. Benjamin Cayetano said it was "too controversial to celebrate statehood at home." On Friday, the day statehood was observed, Slom welcomed a group of about 50 people who arrived with big smiles, American flags and plans to enjoy music by the Kalani High School Band, who were recruited to play its favorite songs. But instead of a warm welcome, the patriots were greeted by a gang of about 50 hostile protestors with bullhorns, a state-of-the-art sound system, and preprinted signs protesting the statehood celebration. They claimed to represent the feelings of an estimated 400,000 native Hawaiians throughout Hawaii and the world. These hoodlums shouted profanities in front of young children, spit and yelled at those there to observe statehood, and said they wanted to "wipe their ass" with the American Flag. One protestor screamed at a military family that it was a really good that Americans died in the 9-11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centers because Americans deserved to be "slammed down." All who spoke on the bullhorns said Americans - even the native Hawaiian people who showed up to celebrate statehood - should get off "their land" and out of Hawaii. One of the rabid-eyed leaders of the pack shouted profanities directly in people‚s ears. He pushed women, children and senior citizens. He spit on people. He bit the American flags people carried, and tried to tear them. He took down his pants and told people to suck him. In front of their children, he called women "bitches" and told them to "show him their tits." He even bragged about being high on crystal math, and said he could do whatever he wanted because he belongs to the "kingdom of Hawaii," not America. Threats of Physical Violence, Verbal Attacks, Targets Kids First: The protesters first attacked the weakest people - in this case the children - so they could break apart the groups and scare them into leaving. The belligerent group began their protest by shouting threats of violence at the young band members who were sitting quietly waiting for the go-ahead from their bandleader to play. They told them and their parents that they would be in danger if they played even one note. “We cannot guarantee your safety unless you put down your instruments and leave the premises immediately,” one protestor shouted from a microphone, feet away from the kids sitting with their instruments in hand. The berating continued for 15 minutes until the bandleader and frightened parents led the kids to the bus that their senator had rented for the occasion. As the kids left, the protestors said that they were victorious, and would be taking back Hawaii from America. State Law Enforcement Never Showed, Despite Lawlessness: As the remaining 50 people there to celebrate statehood stood in a circle and sang the National Anthem and Hawaii Pono I, the protestors interrupted them, yelling, cursing and threatening to burn the American flags. Threats were also made against other citizens including Senator Slom and State Rep. Barbara Marumoto, who enthusiastically arrived at the celebration dressed as “Lady Liberty”, freedom torch in hand. Surprisingly, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, based just across the streetl, did not send its officers to intervene during the hour-long event. Some of the "unlawful events" included threatening children, parents, elected officials, and innocent civilians. Immoral “flashing” in front of women and children, demonstrating and using sound systems without a permit. They even rode a motorcycle up to the palace steps - off-limits to automobiles and motorcycles. '

THE MAUI NEWS
"The effects of statehood differ among Hawaiians"
It's my party and I'll cry if I want to! 2009 on Maui.
' As Hawaii observes a half century of statehood Friday, some Maui County Native Hawaiian activists remained steadfast that the achievement only cemented the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. It is an irritating reminder, they say, that statehood further fortified existing government- and business-created ramparts against native sovereignty. With statehood, Native Hawaiians lost property ownership rights as well as native control of natural resources, such as unfettered access to shorelines, fishing and hunting, and fresh water. In their view, the 50th state had already been transformed by pineapple and sugar plantations and later became an overwhelmed and kitschy tourist mecca. To many other Native Hawaiians, the timing of statehood's 50th anniversary is impeccable. After a decade of toil, this very likely could be the year a bill before Congress by U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka establishing sovereignty - in some form - will become a reality. Hawaii-born President Barack Obama has said he'd support the Akaka Bill, which would give Native Hawaiians self-determination rights similar to those possessed by Native American and Alaskan tribes. Sovereignty would not be possible without statehood, said retired 2nd Circuit Judge and Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee Boyd Mossman. "Our people generally have turned off to society. They're with drugs, the education is the worst, their standards of living are the worst. They make up all the social ills of Hawaii," he said. "You gotta ask yourself, 'What good did statehood do for the Native Hawaiians?' Although, some have assimilated into Western Hawaii, lost their Hawaiianness and become coconuts - dark on the outside and white on the inside." To many, statehood allowed mostly Mainland white and foreign business interests to exploit the native culture over the past 50 years, providing a luau of profits for themselves while Native Hawaiians were left, often literally, with the leftovers. The Hawaiian kingdom was overthrown in 1893 when a group of white businessmen forced Queen Lili'uokalani to abdicate her throne. Meanwhile, U.S. Marines came ashore. Until Congress declared it a U.S. territory in 1898, Hawaii was a republic, a political status many activists would like to see reinstated. '

DOES WIKIPEDIA HATE HAWAIIANS?

.
MAKE-BELIEVE ENCYCLOPEDIA PILES ON WOUNDED MOLOKAI

MAINLAND REPUBLICAN DEVELOPERS TAKING OVER HAWAII PAGES FOR PR?

Many People Take These Fictitious, Biased, Bigoted "Articles" To Be Factual

There is no fact-checking on Wikipedia. A bunch of amateurs crib stuff from real reference works, lard in their own unlettered opinions and stuff from their personal agendas, and voila, instant truth. Not.

There have been many instances in the recent past when politicos and corporate types posted blatant PR and propaganda as objective fact, or altered other people's posts to remove facts they found embarassing on Wikipedia. Now they are taking over whole sections of the fauxyclopedia, and really workin' it.

I caught them out recently, in browsing the Hawaii pages on Wikipedia. Posted below, you'll see the glaringly obvious editorializing (and my response, which was immediately deleted). You never hear bullshit like this in Hawaii unless it's from one of the rich right-wing racist Republican assholes that the Party sends over here with lawyers, guns and money, attacking Hawaiian rights in the Courts and in their tame pet corporate Mainland-owned local newspapers and halls of government. I never could quite understand why they would bother. Now I know. Hawaiians and Hawaiian rights stand in the way of the final and fatal over-development of this former paradise.

At best, Hawaiians could demand, and maybe even get, input on design and a piece of the action on any major development in Hawaii, especially "up the country," on the less-"developed' neighbor islands, and along the shorelines of all the Isles, which are supposed to belong to all of us.

At worst, the Hawaiian people and their friends throughout Hawaii and the world could put a stop to potentially any big project. The unresolved issues of Hawaiian sovereignty, Hawaiian homelands, and the right to revenues from government owned and managed former Crown lands give force to any argument against development.

The fact is, nobody but a few greedy pigs wants to see Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Maui or the Big Island of Hawaii turned into another over-crowded, polluted, over-priced, drug & crime-infested, diminishing quality of life nightmare like much of the main island of Oahu, where roughly 900,000 of the State's approximately 1.2 million people live, in a mini-L.A. Yes, everybody would like jobs, and housing, and government services. But not at the expense of their whole way of life on the outer islands.

If "sustainability" and "green" this and that are anything but buzzwords, they need to be applied here. If Hawaii can grow in a way that doesn't resemble an inoperable cancer, local people will consider it. If the unique way of life here can be preserved alongside a little higher standard of living, some development might even be welcome. But not the kind of grotesquely inappropriate nonsense that Asian gangsters and their flacks on Wikipedia and in our corporate media and government are trying to shove down Molokaians throats now. Read it and weep. Is this any way to run a utopia?

WIKIPEDIA:

Molokai - culture

" Moloka{{okina}}i has a reputation in Hawaii as an island where westerners are not welcome. There have been numerous attempts in Moloka{{okina}}i to stop development of hotels and other tourists resorts by the largely indigenous population opposed to westernization. In frustration the Molokai Ranch, the island's largest employer, decided on March 24th 2008 to shut all operations, resulting in a layoff of 120 workers. The Ranch cited community opposition to its plan of developing a multi-million dollar beachfront estate. The lack of westernization has resulted in the highest unemployment in all of Hawaii. "

[MY RESPONSE ON WIKIPEDIA, SINCE CENSORED]:

*NOTE: While a few Molokaians may oppose any and all development in principle, most were willing to arrive at some compromise with the new, foreign owners of the old Molokai Ranch. The foreign investors' proposal for a super-luxury international resort and millionaires' housing development was judged largely inappropriate for the character of the island and its' people by a majority of the people themselves. It could have meant the destruction of the environment and the society of the Friendly Isle, and it might have eliminated the reasons people come to this small, quiet island in the first place. It was these investors who refused to consider any compromise, and who then shut down the Ranch, the island's largest employer, and threatened to shut down its' water system, which provides most of the area's drinking water, in violation of their agreements and obligations to the State of Hawaii and its' people.

As to the "fact" that most people in Hawaii regard the people of the "Friendly Isle" as unfriendly to "Westerners;" and that Molokaians oppose "Westernization;" and that unemployment on Molokai is due to "lack of Westernization:" These are opinions, not facts. These are opinions one never hears expressed here in Hawaii. These are opinions contradicted by facts the author himself cites in his own article. The population is itself 21.3% "Western:"
"15.65% White, "0.43% African American," "Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.22% of the population"
The population is also "18.70% Asian", and "30.87% from two or more races". "34.35% are Pacific Islander", which includes every island in the Pacific, not just Hawaii.

Molokai is, like all of Hawaii, ethnically and culturally mixed. Western influences have largely dominated: The first language of nearly everyone born in the State of Hawaii is English. The local "patois" is Pidgin English, with elements of Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, Chamorro, Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Ilocano, Okinawan, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc. Most people on Molokai wear the same kind of clothing, live in the same kinds of houses, drive the same kinds of cars, do the same kinds of jobs, attend the same kinds of schools, worship at the same kinds of churches, serve in government and the military, and observe the same customs as most people the rest of the State, and much of the Mainland
(at least the warmer parts). They could hardly be more "Westernized." What many object to on Molokai, and throughout the State, and the Mainland, and the World, is over-development, and attempts to achieve it by undemocratic means, including forced unemployment.

HAWAIIAN RAINBOW AT THE END OF THE WASHINGTON POT OF GOLD

.
ALOHA STATE GETS SENATE APPROPRIATIONS CHAIR

UNCA DAN, AKA CAPT. PORK, WILL CONTROL FEDERAL CASH MACHINE

HawaiiPorkBarrelQuarter copyright 2008 Cosanostradamus blog me no blogs

I, Cosanostradamus, Foresee An H-4, H-5, H-6 and H-7 Freeway And An All-State Bridge

It's only fifteen hundred miles from the Big Island to Midway. Why not a bridge, linking all the main islands in between? Or maybe a tunnel? Hell, why not both? And another one to California. And one to Japan! And Tahiti! Woo-Hoo!!!

Corrupt, incompetent local construction firms are already ejaculating over this one. The biggest pork-barrel spender in Congressional history now has the power of the purse in his own pocket. Uncle Dan Inouye, Hawaii's senior U.S. Senator and local power-broker since the invention of volcanoes, has provided jobs and infrastructure for people and places here in the Islands (whether they needed them or deserved them or not) so reliably over the years, that he can single-handedly be held responsible for 10-20% of the State's entire local economy. Not bad for a one-armed man, or as some low-life called him, a one-armed bandit.

Inouye lost his right arm fighting for our side in The Big One, the Tom Hanks movie war. Hard to say no to a Japanese guy who lost his arm fighting for your side, once he starts twisting yours. Inouye is one of the last of the WWII guys left in Warshenden. He was awarded the Medal of Honor belatedly, after being denied it due to his ancestry. Largely because of this, he commands far more respect in the Senate than his legislative abilities merit.

An officer in the legendary 442nd Regimental Combat Team that, to hear them tell it, single-handedly won the War, Inouye and his men went on to take over the Democratic Party once they got home, and then the Territory, and then the State of Hawaii. They were the vanguard of a political and socio-economic revolution that forced accommodation upon the old "haole" ascendancy (whites, foreigners, greedy racist bastards) and Hawaiian ali'i (aristocracy, parasites, traitors). "Lowly" Asian and Pacific Island cane-cutters and pineapple-canners entered the worlds of politics and business, academia and the professions for the first time. Meanwhile, the local Japanese ended up pretty much running things, so long as they were willing to accommodate the remains of the old elite, still in place behind the scenes today.

Unfortunately, that revolution has sputtered out. It never quite reached much beyond the new local Japanese elite. Other Asians and Pacific Islanders are still shut out. There are precious few good jobs here, other than those that are directly or indirectly dependent upon the government. After 50 years of representing the 50th State and its' ruling Democratic Party, Dan Inouye has yet to help foster the creation of one new industry to replace the old dying ones, and few new businesses or jobs outside of government itself. When he dies, Inouye will leave a legacy of dependence upon Washington, which, without him in place, will result in a huge deficit of cash to the Islands, and nothing to replace it.

Inouye & Co. have presided over the death of agriculture, once our main industry, and the sputtering of tourism, pretty much all we have left. The military, which is a huge part of the local economy, will be cutting back now. They spend most of their time and more of their money on their endless deployments since 911, anyway. This leaves only low-paying retail and government-dependent health care as major components of our local economy. And of course, construction, which is utterly dependent upon all of the above. And your tax dollars, Mainlanders. T'anks, eh?

This past Tuesday, a new revolution was narrowly averted by Dan & company. The overwhelming force of new & disaffected voters that made it to the caucuses and the primaries did not quite overwhelm in the general election. Bad ballot measures passed, the same old same old will be returning to power in even greater numbers. (Not that the wacky Republicans had anything better to offer.) Nothing is going to change here any time soon: Especially not with the oldest same-old same-old of all handing out the candy on Capitol Hill.

It's too bad. The entire nation may experience the same disappointment once the dust settles in DC. Obama is only one man, beholden to many, especially the many who run the old Democratic machine, more especially in Congress. There is already talk of "moving to the right," and "governing from the center." Obama's first picks for his White House staff are old-school Clintonians, abrasive power-brokers who have worked better with conservatives than liberals in the past. Whether Obama is simply making calming gestures to a newly nervous Wall Street, or signaling a quick end to talk of change of any real sort, I guess we'll find out.

Meanwhile, back in Paradise, the celebrations can continue. And thanks for picking up the check, America! We couldn't live without ya! Or your money! MWA! Mahalos! Aloha! Suckers!

POLITICO
"Byrd will voluntarily give up chairmanship"
Revenge of the ninja's! HAIIIIII!!!!!!
' Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), who is 84, will take over for Byrd on the powerful panel, which oversees hundreds of billions of dollars annually in federal spending. Byrd will officially hand off the gavel on Jan. 6, 2009. And in a sense, it is a very Byrd-like move to step aside in favor of Inouye. After all, Inouye served with Byrd in the leadership for years, only to lose out when he tried to move up after Byrd stepped down as majority leader in 1988 to take the Appropriations Committee post. In doing so, Byrd stepped in front of Inouye, who would have otherwise succeeded then-Appropriations Chairman John Stennis (D-Miss.), and at 84, he has waited a long time for some time at the helm. '

"Inouye takes over powerful Senate committee"
Senators suddenly reminded: Inouye is still alive.
' Democratic Sen. Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii will become the next chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee with an announcement today that Sen. Robert Byrd would step down from the position Jan. 6. Byrd, who is 90, said it was time for Inouye, 84, to take over the committee. He will also continue as chair of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. Inouye has been a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee since January 1971. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., confirmed that Inouye would be chairman in the next Congress that convenes in January. Inouye will be taking over at time when the Democrats will have increased majorities in the Senate and the House, and Hawaii native son Barack Obama, also a Democrat, is in the White House. The senator will preside over a committee that decides how hundreds of billions of federal dollars are spent annually. For Hawaii, it means the senator could build on his successes in steering hundreds of millions a year to the state for various projects from Native Hawaiian health care to brown tree snake control. But the congressional appropriations process has been coming under greater scrutiny in the past few years over the billions of dollars federal lawmakers divert to special projects, known as earmarks. Steve Ellis, vice president of Taxpayers for Common Sense, said there will be a change in the top leadership of the committee but "certainly Inouye has not been any slouch in delivering the bacon to Hawaii and I think that is going to continue." "I don't think Senator Inouye is about to pick up that mantle of reform or change. He is a member of the old guard." '

"Embattled Alaska Sen. Stevens Tops List for Earmarks"
So, we're in good company here. Good thing the local Democrats didn't take a look at Uncle Dan's finances...
' On the House side, the biggest earmarker was again Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. John Murtha , with $111.1 million, according to the data compiled by TCS. The spending bills will fund disaster aid, Defense, Homeland Security, military construction and Veterans Administration budgets for fiscal year 2009. Other big earmarkers in the House were Rep. C.W. “Bill” Young (R., Fla.), with $99 million; Rep. Jerry Lewis (R., Ca.), $78.2 million, and Rep. David Obey (D., Wisc.), $51.5 million. Senate standouts included Sen. Thad Cochran (R., Miss.), $238.5 million; Sen. Robert Byrd (D., W.Va.), $224.9 million; and Sen. Daniel Inouye (D., Hawaii), $222.2 million. '

PACIFIC BUSINESS JOURNALS
"Inouye brings home the pork"
Oink, oink.
' A government watchdog group said Tuesday Sen. Daniel Inouye is one of Washington’s top five pork-barrel spenders. Citizens Against Government Waste criticized the Hawaii Democrat for $182 million in wasteful spending, including $23 million for the Hawaii Federal Healthcare Network, $10 million for the Hawaii Technology Development Venture, and $3.6 million for Intelligent Decision Exploration. Inouye is chairman of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. Despite the reduction, Citizens Against Government Waste said at least seven legislators appropriated more than $100 million, including Inouye. They other top pork-barrel spenders were Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska; Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss.; Sen Robert Byrd, D-W. Va.; and Rep. Bill Young, R-Fla. '

' Hawai'i's economy is reeling from a number of shocks to tourism and jobs brought on by a slowing U.S. economy, high oil prices, subprime mortgage problems and in recent weeks, a financial market crisis. That resulted in visitor arrivals tumbling 19.5 percent and unemployment reaching a seven-year high in September. Brewbaker's revised forecast is similar to other forecasts this year in that it lowers most projections. While some of his estimates — he forecasts visitor arrivals will drop by 10.6 percent this year and the number of jobs will shrink by 0.4 percent — are slightly more negative than other economists locally, the state and the University of Hawai'i Economic Research Organization are expected to revise their numbers downward in coming weeks. "Little relief seen for Hawaii real estate"
After 50 years of Uncle Dan, we still don't make anything we can sell elsewhere. We have no local economy. We have only that portion of YOUR econonmy that you're willing to export here.
' Hawaii's slumping visitor industry may be one of its greatest commercial real estate concerns during the current cycle, said Jonathan D. Martin, principal author of the report, which is based on surveys from more than 600 leading real estate experts from investors to developers, brokers and consultants. "Given Honolulu's dependence on tourist travel, the market could face headwinds next year - companies will cut back on corporate events and individuals will be scaling back vacation plans," Martin said. "As a result, the local economy is probably more vulnerable to recessionary impacts, and that will hurt hotels and shopping centers especially." '

"Maui Land & Pineapple CEO stepping down"
Lotta land. Not so much pineapple.
' The executive changes were announced along with the Maui Land & Pineapple’s third quarter results, which showed a drop in profits amid Hawaii’s slowing real estate and tourism markets. Maui Land & Pineapple (NYSE: MLP) reported a net loss of $8.7 million, or $1.09 per share, for the third quarter, compared with a net loss of $155,000, or 2 cents per share, during the same period last year. Revenues were $19.1 million, compared with $28.5 million during the third quarter last year. “Results reflect deteriorating market conditions in the Hawaii real estate and hospitality segments, including $2.5 million in severance costs and a $4 million increase in reserves for potential defaults on closings,” Cole said in a statement. “The Residences at Kapalua Bay, a project that is continuing despite the bankruptcy of its lead lender, recorded $11 million of sales in the third quarter.” The company’s resort business reported an operating loss of $5.7 million for the third quarter, compared with a loss of $3.1 million for the same period in 2007. The company noted a reduction in visitor arrivals and occupancy at the resort combined with higher operating costs and higher fuel and energy prices were responsible for the increased operating loss. HAWAIIAN KING CLOWNED

.
CRAZED FELONS ASSAULT WOMAN, CLAIM HAWAIIAN THRONE

ONLY, THEY COULDN'T FIND IT

Now These Clown-Princes Are Beating Up Women

Wife-beating, of course, really is an old Polynesian tradition. Nothing like a good beating to put da wahine in her place, eh, Brah? Hawaii probably has the highest rate of domestic violence in the nation, if not the world. The police do nothing about it. A Honolulu Police Department Sergeant stood by today, at the gates of the State-owned Iolani Palace museum two blocks from HPD headquarters, watching a female museum worker being repeatedly struck by several men, and did nothing. Well, not nothing: The cop walked away.

Hawaii State Sheriff's deputies have previously stood by and done nothing as "sovereignty activists," i.e. racist thugs claiming to be Hawaiian, assaulted women and children at State functions on the grounds of the Iolani Palace museum. The deputies indicated they sympathized with the attackers. One of the thugs in Friday's attack claimed to be a U.S. Marshall. The assaults at the former palace might almost be said to be sanctioned by law enforcement, if not perpetrated by them.

The Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources, which is supposed to exercise control over the palace museum on behalf of all the people of Hawaii, has closed the museum. New rules for access to the palace are now being considered. Maybe they'll start checking for Hawaiian blood-quantum. But that could backfire, as most of these sovereignty clowns are less than half Hawaiian.

This is allowed to go on because it provides a convenient outlet for the personal frustrations of the life-long losers and fringe elements that make up most of the so-called Hawaiian sovereignty movement. As long as they have a sandbox to carry out their play-acting, there will be no attempts to actually accomplish anything. The palace provides a convenient place to watch and contain these fools, and a stage where they may humiliate themselves and de-legitimize their "cause." No serious Hawaiian would ever want to be associated with these assholes. So, no serious Hawaiian sovereignty movement will ever get off the ground. Problem solved. The clowns are just doing the work of the State and Federal government: Keeping the Hawaiians in check, forever.

' At one point, witnesseses said, three men shoved aside a palace employee as she attempted to allow someone onto the grounds. The incident occurred near the diamondhead side gate. A witness, attorney James Wright, said the men struck the employee and slammed her into a gate in front of a Honolulu police officer. All the officer said is "this is not HPD jurisdiction," Wright said. Wright said the woman was attempting to escort him onto the grounds when three men began to assault her. "They hit her and hit her and hit and the police sergeant stood there and did nothing," Wright said. While they were not punching her, "they were slamming her against the post and then slamming the gate on her," he said. "And the police officer did nothing to protect her. The cop literally walked away while she was still being pushed around." Said Wright: "They said she could leave but no one could come in." He said the woman did nothing to fight back except to shout "stop hitting me" and "stop assaulting me." The group let reporters onto the palace grounds for about an hour. '

"Purported monarch couldn’t find throne"
' Followers of James Kimo Akahi had planned to chain him to the throne in Iolani Palace that he claims for the Kingdom of Hawaii. But, Akahi said yesterday, the group couldn't find the throne room after breaking into the historic building. Akahi, 67, of Haiku, Maui, said he had never been inside the palace until Friday -- Statehood Day -- when he and 22 others in a Hawaiian sovereignty group were arrested by state officers. Court records show Akahi has 20 criminal convictions in Hawaii that date back to 1961, including assault, theft and burglary. '

"Police conduct questioned"
' DLNR spokeswoman Deborah Ward said yesterday that the palace would be closed at least through the weekend. "We are continuing our investigation into what happened and no further comment would be appropriate at this time," she said. Public access will be restricted "until it is possible for us to assess any damage and to ensure the palace doors are secure ... . We regret that we are unable to share the palace with visitors until the assessment is complete," a statement from the palace said. Lingle said the DLNR is in the process of reviewing the rules regarding 'Iolani Palace security. Those rules need to be rewritten in order to restrict access to maintain security, she said. "It's always a balance between having access for the public — because it belongs to the public — but also protecting it." Law enforcement officers from the DLNR remained on palace grounds overnight and into the early morning hours yesterday. Fifteen of those arrested face misdemeanor trespassing charges and were released. But eight of the protesters were arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary, a Class C felony under Hawai'i law punishable by up to five years in prison. Those arrested on suspicion of burglary were listed on the arrest log as His Majesty Akahi Nui, leader of the group; as well as Wayne Nunes, Vinessa Fimbres, Tanya Kaahanui and Terry Kaahanui. Also arrested on suspicion of burglary were Donald Love-Boltz, Waynette Nunes and Akahi Wahine. Akahi Nui, a retired heavy equipment operator from Ha'iku, Maui, was released pending investigation. He said yesterday he'll be back. "I plan it. I know I can take it over. With the help of God, I will take it over," he said. Akahi Nui has a criminal record with 20 prior charges, including four felonies. "Everybody when they're young, they do a lot of mistakes. Your parents say not to do that, you still do that. I got plenty of charges, yes," he said. The charges were for burglary and assault and battery, he said. '

HAWAII REPORTER
"Proposed New Rules for 'Iolani Palace and Grounds"
' I was a participant in the attempt to hold a pro-American celebration of Statehood Day in August 2006. That celebration was led by Senator Sam Slom and Representative Barbara Marumoto, and included the Kalani High School band. We had an official permit. But a crowd of secessionist agitators showed up before the celebration could begin. They posted very large banners stretching between the trees on the King Street side of the building, played music loudly from at least one boom-box amplified through loud-speakers, yelled at the participants through an amplified megaphone. They were there for the sole purpose of disrupting and preventing the celebration of Statehood Day. Like sharks, they began their attack by singling out the weakest, most vulnerable targets -- the children of the Kalani High School band. They walked right up to the Kalani students who were seated and ready to play their instruments, yelled loudly in their faces, gave warnings through their megaphone that bad things were going to happen and the students should leave. The parents and chaperones, fearing for the safety of the children, did indeed lead them away and back onto their bus before a single note of music could be played. Having successfully intimidated the band, they then swarmed the adult celebrants, with individual and small groups of hooligans stepping up nose-to-nose to yell in the faces of the celebrants including cursing, spitting, thrusting fingers repeatedly to within inches of eyes, and yelling historical nonsense. It was clear that the hooligans had a well-orchestrated plan, with individual protesters singling out individual celebrants. There was no attempt by any state or city or DLNR law enforcement officers to restore order and protect the legitimate celebrants -- indeed, it appeared there were zero security personnel present. A few weeks later at another Palace event (Liliuokalani's birthday) I questioned a group of three sheriffs in uniform who admitted that some sheriffs (perhaps themselves) had been sitting inside the Palace basement on Statehood Day and did nothing (perhaps because they sided with the views of the secessionists). HAWAII SUPREME COURT MAKING NEW LAW?

.
NOT EXACTLY HOW THEY PLANNED

MORE LIKE OLD LAW, REAFFIRMED

"States' Rights" May Trump Native Hawaiian Rights In Federal Court

Ever since President Clinton signed the Congressional Resolution apologizing for the United States' involvement in the Overthrow of the government of the Hawaiian Kingdom, people here have been expecting some sort of resolution to the questions left unanswered by the historical process from Kingdom to Republic to Territory to State to Whatever?. This ain't it.

Whatever the truth may be about this process, the process is unfinished. Issues of rights and responsibilities, land and money, democracy and sovereignty, law and justice still hang over everybody's head in Hawaii. Until they are settled, we will never be able to move forward.

The Akaka Bill, still stalled in Congress after eight long years, may or may not pass in its' present form in the next, presumably Democratic Congress. Many here hope that it does not, including some Hawaiian sovereignty activists. It has been marketed, but not quite sold, as the last best deal the kanaka maoli, or native people, will ever get. Judging by the time and trouble this bill is taking, that may be true.

Meanwhile, the conservative-dominated US Supreme Court may just slap down the Hawaii State Supreme Court, telling our Justices that they have been too liberal with the law, or too free-handed with the former Crown Lands now controlled by the State. As much as ten per cent of all the land in Hawaii is owned or managed by the State: 1,200,000 acres. Some of it is unusable for any purpose. Some of it is critical to the functioning of the State. Some of it produces taro and mangoes, some of it produces millions of dollars in revenue each year. Much of it belongs to the Hawaiian people, or it did; and it may again, some day.

The division and use of land is the essence of State power. It is the foundation of monarchies and republics. Who gets what, and who gets to decide who gets what, are what everything is all about. It's the life-blood of politics. If all politics is local, then it should be up to the local people to decide how Hawaii's land and its' produce are used and apportioned. That is a political process, not a judicial one. To have so vast an amount of land and treasure given or taken away by a judge or judges is a violation of our political process. By attempting to violate this, our State Supreme Court has simply thrown our fate to a higher Court on the Mainland. They overstepped their bounds in trying to short-circuit the political process. They were wrong on the law, and wrong on the politics. By trying to rush the process, they have stalled it. But why?

There is no terrible urgency to this. The issues are over a hundred years old. No one is dying, no one is starving, no one is rotting away in prison over ceded Crown Lands. If they ever are reapportioned, it is highly unlikely that the neediest people will get much of anything. The lands currently managed by the State Office of Hawaiian Homelands are not now given or sold, but leased out, usually for 99 years. The lessees are held in thrall to the State, owning nothing, having few rights other than mere occupancy, subject to various conditions. They are tenants, like sharecroppers, and have not much higher status than medieval peasants. There are native Hawaiian families that have been on the waiting list for land for generations.

The State Office of Hawaiian Affairs, which controls much of the money accruing to the Hawaiian people, spends most of its' time in squabbling and self-aggrandisement. They spend millions every year on all sorts of things: Court cases, for one. Yet Hawaiians have some of the worst social and medical problems of any group in the country. Obesity, diabetes, asthma, drug addiction, mental illness, family violence, depression, unemployment and homelessness are all worse for Hawaiians than any other group in Hawaii. The sovereignty movement, the State agencies, and the incredibly wealthy old Hawaiian ali'i families, trusts and estates don't seem to be in any hurry to help the real problems of the real Hawaiian people. They're too busy fighting for personal power and wealth, only posturing and making meaningless points on behalf of the kanaka.

The question arises, who do these people represent? Whose interests? Who are the real representatives of the kanaka maoli? Who will fight for their interests? At this point, in our political system, there is no one fighting for those interests, no one of any consequence, no one with the will or the power to actually do anything. The Hawaiians, in effect, have no power, and very little voice in how Hawaii is run. This is why our Justices tried to short circuit the political process. But it didn't work.

There is no mono-ethnic, racialist or racist solution to this problem. Hawaiians are now a minority in Hawaii: Less than 250,000 out of over a million claim even partial Hawaiian ancestry. There are fewer and fewer people in the Islands with even 50% Hawaiian blood. Still, most people of all bloodlines here believe in an Hawaiian ethos, however mythical. Most people would like to see these issues resolved, and justice done by all. If a State-wide referendum were held, the majority would vote for return of some portion of the old royal properties or their revenues to the Hawaiians, in some fashion. The problem is, there is no one to organize and promote such a referendum. There is no one trusted by all to speak for the Hawaiian people, who could legitimately receive anything in their name.

There is talk of a new State Constitutional Convention. There is a great resurgence within the majority Democratic Party, as people are caught up in the campaign of local-boy Barack Obama. The ingredients are there for a solution to many of these problems. Entrenched interests on all sides will fight, or stall, to hang on to their wealth and power and position. But if a great majority of all of the people of Hawaii stand up together, and actively work together for a solution, we might not have to rely on lawyers, politicians, bureaucrats and special interests to solve it for us. That might be pono.

HAWAII DEMS SAY RULES TRUMP RIGHTS FOR VOTERS

.
"NO WORK-AROUND" ON MISSED REGISTRATION DEADLINE

CONFUSING PROCESS MAY HAVE DISENFRANCHISED THOUSANDS

Caucuses Plus Primaries Does Not Equal A Guaranteed Right To Vote In The General Election?

In other States, local Party organizations will whisk you into Court with one of their own lawyers, to make sure that you can vote, even at the last minute. In Hawaii, they just regurgitate the State's line that "you should have known" how the complex processes involved in actually getting to vote work, exactly, and thereunto summarily prestidigitated as per Section Blah of the Code, Paragraph Blah, official public notices pursuant to which were duly published in the smallest possible type in the most obscure part of certain publications that nobody under eighty ever reads any more, forthwith, Blah. Get it? Blah!

The Dems and the State refused to acknowledge that most people don't know or care about all this official political BS: They just want to go down and vote on November Fourth. And it is their BS, the Dems and the State they control: Despite their pretense that it is The Law, and Nothing Can Be Done, as if it had been handed down by Gawd A'mighty on stone tablets thousands of years ago, the local Democrats wrote these disenfranchising laws themselves in the very recent past. And they should have legislated a work-around for people who didn't get the word.

The State and the local Dems also refuse to acknowledge the obvious fact that most people under fifty rarely if ever read newspapers, where these official notices and mind-numbingly boring procedural stories get published. Nor do many more folks watch the local broadcast TV news, especially younger people, the new wave in voting this year.

Everybody knows, or SHOULD know, that it's the Internets, and cable TV shows like "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" whence most people are getting their news these days. The advantage is, they can avoid the endless corporate propaganda of the "official" media. The disadvantage is, there is little or no local news on cable or the Web, at least in podunk towns like Hawaii. In short, neither the State nor the Dems has a blog, nor do they ever text us. So, LOL, nobody knows WTF the rules are, IMHO. And their stodgy, ginormous, uninformative, convoluted websites are no help at all. Even they can't find stuff on them. So we damn sure can't, HELLO???

The State and the Dems who run it will find out when their peeps show up on 4 NOV 08, and find they can't vote because they forgot to say "May I?" They didn't have to say "May I?" for the privilege of paying taxes, fees, fines, or assessments. They didn't have to say "May I?" for the honor of serving in the military or on voluntary public service projects. They didn't have to say "May I?" to obey the signs posted EVERYWHERE telling you how fast or how slow you can drive, where and when to stop and turn and park and don't park, what to do at the airports, seaports and government buildings. So, maybe you can understand their forgetting to say "May I?" when it came time to vote on all that sh*t. Well, maybe you can understand, but the local government, i.e the Democrats, cannot. Nor do they care. They said so.

Personally, I think this is the pol's way of dealing with the popular tsunami that overwhelmed them in the caucuses back in February. Turnout increased by 700% over the largest previous voter turnout. Of course, these enthusiastic new and rare voters didn't have to register a month or more in advance. As with everything else in our convenience-oriented society, they simply went down there and voted. No worries. It got done. Many of those people may not have subsequently vote in the Primaries, which seemed redundant, probably assuming that it was OK to just show up in November for the general election. Not! Not to mention all those who blew off the pre-lims, figuring they'd just pop in for the big show.

I don't know what ever happened to "motor voter" -The freakin' jury-duty Nazi's all seen to have everybody's name. But somehow, the rest of the G, which knows everything else about us, isn't quite sure if we're all eligible to vote, year by year. So they silently expect us to do some ritual dance to register or re-register or re-re-register, but they don't make a big thing about it until you actually try to vote, unlike what they do when it comes time to pay your taxes, or when the cops decide to set up a vast network of roadblocks and arrest people who forgot about traffic tickets, under the "click-it-or-ticket" excuse. See, when they really want you to know something, they make damn sure you know it. Not so much on voting. How come?

Lack of voter participation favors incumbents, that's why. As far as the guy sitting in the office right now is concerned, they might as well not have elections at all, any more, now that he's won one. So why rock da boat, brah? Especially here in Hawaii. "One nail dat steek up gon' get hammahd down, eh." As far as I'm concerned, this arbitrary, confusing, anti-democratic system of registration is a deliberate attempt to keep people from voting, in order to assure the survival of the status quo.

But wait until this election day. If the caucuses were any indication, there will be thousands and thousands of new and seldom-seen voters showing up at the polls. And if the attitude of the State and the Dems is any indication, there will be many thousands turned away for forgetting to say "May I?" That just sucks.

Hey, Barry, I know this is not a good time for you, with your Tutu sick and all, and good health to her; but, while you're here . . . How 'bout kick your Party in the ass so we can all vote for our homey? Hm?

KPUA HILO
"State senator blames defeat on DUI, low turnout"

' Menor said he was surprised that he lost the race because his polling indicated he had a large lead. But he blames the lowest primary turnout in Hawaii primary election history — less than 35 percent of registered voters — for his downfall. "Many of those people who would have voted for me clearly did not show up to the polls," Menor said. '

HONOLULU STAR BULLETIN
"Voter registration deadline is tomorrow"

' Hawaii had a record low turnout of about 37 percent in its Sept. 20 primary election, but the Nov. 4 general election should generate more interest with Honolulu-born Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain on the ballot for president. During Hawaii's Democratic caucuses in February, Obama supporters formed long lines and overwhelmed caucus sites, ballooning the number of registered Democrats in the state from 22,000 to 51,000. "This year more than ever, it's valuable that those who feel strongly about change turn out on Election Day," said Hawaii Democratic Party Chairman Brian Schatz. "Turnout was abysmal in the primary. We are hopeful that we're going to see that trend turn around as a result of the enthusiasm for Senator Obama." Any Hawaii resident who is a U.S. citizen over 18 years old may register to vote. Currently registered voters who have changed their name or address since the last election should reregister. There are about 682,000 registered voters in Hawaii, which reflects a steady increase in each election since 2004. Turnout was about 53 percent in 2006 and 67 percent in 2004, when Republican President Bush won a second term against Democrat John Kerry. '
