In the civilized States, that is. But not just on the coasts. Now that Iowa has become the fourth State to legalize same-sex nuptials, the NE/ West Coast lock on kewlness is officially broken. The corn may be as high as an elephant's eye, but Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Sioux City are about to become gay Mecca's. Who knows, Ames or Davenport could become the next Miami Beach or San Francisco.

With all the brouhaha, it's important to remember that marriage is not just a legal or religious bond. It is the bonding of two souls for all eternity, that they might experience everything in life together and grow old in one another's arms, loving and supporting each other until the day they die. That is the foundation of human society and culture, the framework of our civilization and the meaning of life itself. However well or ill two people manage to carry it out, that marriage is the central work of a lifetime, and a person without it is one who is deprived of nearly all of the greatest gifts of humanity. For this reason, every man and every woman seeks a partner for life, be it friend or lover, companion or spouse, male or female, same sex or opposite. To go through life alone, without such a partner, is a punishment that few merit. To arbitrarily assess such a penalty is to deny a human being the most basic of rights: The right to be who he or she is at heart. No society can do this and still call itself civilized. If there is a God or a Heaven, He or She surely did not mean for the greatest gift of all to be denied to anyone arbitrarily. Let no man rend asunder what God has joined together.

Here's some of that semi-articulate rage that helped put Obama over the top, by motivating a new generation of slackers to finally get off their asses and vote. These songs were recommended by Tom Grierson of About.com . Cuz WTF do I know about this sh*t. I'm an old man. Suddenly.

The year's top ten Protest Rock songs, picked by some kid who knows better than me, probly. It's all noise to me, y'know? Where's the melody, the harmony, the lyrics? How can you dance to this? Will anybody still listen to these kids' music in twenty, thirty, forty years or more? Who's going to whistle these tunes? Whose going to make love to them? Who's going to be their balladeer, their troubador, their crooner of sweet melodies, like Hank Williams, Little Richard, Eric Burdon, Iggy Stooge, Sid Vicious, or the Dead Kennedy's? Where's the freakin ROMANCE, hanh? I dunno. These kids today. I guess I'm just not "happenin'" any more, or something, y'know? Dag-nab it!

Gratitude is a great joy. It defeats all sorrows. All you have to do is open your heart and be glad of something. Surely there there must be SOMEthing!? How about music? Has any musician ever required anything of you that you weren't ready to give? "Hey, please, everybody, listen to my music," was all they asked. (Let's leave your groupie days out of this. And no unfortunate room-mate stories, either. We're just talking MUSIC here... )

If you didn't like the music, you moved on. If you did, then it entered your heart and you became grateful for it. See how easy? Just DO it, like the annoying sneakers say. Isn't it easy? Doesn't it feel good? OK, then, HAPPY THANKSGIVING! : )
