MIDNIGHT AT THE OHTA WAFER FACTORY
THE SCREAMS OF THE TORTURE VICTIMS DISTURB THE NIGHT
NO ONE DARES ASK WHO, OR WHAT, OR WHY
Everyone Pretends There's Nothing Going On
Once they began the torture, everyone was at risk. Even the torturers might one day find themselves being tormented by their successors. In fact, it was a certainty. Once the idea caught on that we could make people say or do anything we wanted just by torturing them, anyone could be tortured. As long as there was one person left untouched, the whole system was subject to question.
So I keep on going as I pass the Ohta Wafer Factory every night. I don't know what a wafer factory is, and I don't want to know. As long as it isn't me in there screaming in the middle of the night, I'm OK. Why make trouble? They will get to me soon enough. And no one will care. In the meantime, I can breathe the air freely, safe in the knowledge that, for the moment at least, someone else is suffering.
Tonight I heard a young woman screaming as I passed the "Wafer Factory." She sounded young, anyway. Maybe she was beautiful, before they went to work on her. From the sound of it, she would be a bloody mess by morning. I thought of going back in the morning, to see if they would dump her in the alley, as they sometimes did with their victims.
I could take her home and nurse her back to health. She might be grateful and perhaps she would begin to love me a little, after a while, maybe, who knows? But it wasn't worth the risk. She might turn me in. Anyway, short of torture, how could I make her love me, and keep on loving me? No. She would only pretend to love me if I tortured her and kept torturing her. Once I stopped the torture, the false love would stop. And it would always be false. It would never work. I couldn't take the risk. Once someone is free, you can't control them. I kept walking, ignoring the screams.
