HARD TIMES
.
IT'S TOUGH TO BE HONEST
Especially When You See Criminals Living Well
I understand the motives of revenge and envy. Everyone feels them, from time to time. It's tough when you work hard and play by the rules; and you see others who don't, living much better than you. This is a big part of the emotional underpinning of Fascism, and Neo-Conservatism.
What I don't understand is envy of the poor, immigrants, minorities, etc. How can even the most hateful Republican imagine that living on the rough edges of society is in any way better than living their own lives, in relative comfort and ease, safe at the soft gooey suburban center of it all?
And how can they envy the poor and not the rich? How can they vote for the privileged and the powerful, who, in fact, do live better than the average person, by definition, and frequently don't work hard or play by the rules?
I can only put it down to the relentless propaganda, spewed out by all media, that warps the very perceptions of so many people. These are people already disposed to racism, sexism, sectarianism, nativism, homophobia, etc: People who subsist on hate and anger, fear and paranoia, envy and selfishness: People who make their decisions based on prejudices and raw emotion: The "core-voters" of the Republican Party.
The only question is, whether these sociopaths and ignoramuses will join with the really big-time criminals in our society, and pervert the course of democracy, again. And whether the rest of us, the 80% super-majority, will do whatever it takes to stop it, this time (in spite of brotherly Governors, hunting-buddy Justices, and campaign-chair voting-machine manufacturers). Or whether we will suffer more stolen elections, more 9/11's, more Iraq's. And more hard times.

FALSE CHOICES
.
CHOICE? WHAT CHOICE?
The Image-Makers Dress Up One Horse As Two
Well, here we go, folks: It's another quadrennial equestrian event pitting the in-breeders of America's political non-stud farms against one another for the thorny crown of Most Moderate, a bland-fest for the ages. Will the Republicans out-Democrat the Democrats, or vice versa? Does it matter?
Anyone who pays attention to what is going on in the world knows that there are far more things in heaven and earth than are imagined in our political philosophy. The whole spectrum of modern American political thought would fit in less than a quarter of the world spectrum, mainly on the right.
There is no Left here. The Wobblies, the Socialists, the Old Left, the New Left, even the Stevensonian Democrats, all fit in a sliver of the European Center-Left. Or, they would if they hadn't been smashed flat and purged by the Right.
Again this year, two self-proclaimed "Centrists" will be trotted out, and proceed to dance all around trying to avoid being called Socialists or Fascists. They don't dare accuse each other of being Commies or Nazi's, but the fear of it will keep them both fighting for the same position on the Center-Right, as in every election year.
Really, what's the difference between two identical Parties, and one-Party rule? Are we so different from the Russians, or the Chinese? Take a look at our phony national "spectrum" (1.a, above) and the real political world (2.b, below), as I have doodled it. See anything you recognize?.
