Obama Defines "Change"
Obama's speech this morning at Philadelphia's Constitution Center was - right time, right place - to me. An emblematic and prominent historic moment in most recent history. A call to drag out old demons and see them for what they really are and what they really do to us as a multiracial society and our destiny as a united nation...
Focusing on the Rev. Wright's recently extracted and overplayed remarks, his relationship with him and pointing out their differences in philosophies, Obama says that Wright's mistake was that he sees society as "stagnant" - unable to change - and we all know this is not so. Obama makes it plain that he believes differently.
He instead speaks of America's ability to change:"But what we know -- what we have seen - is that America can change. That is true genius of this nation. What we have already achieved gives us hope - the audacity to hope - for what we can and must achieve tomorrow."
Just as Gandhi says: "You must be the change you want to see in the world." so Obama does.
Obama addresses racism head on and invites us to continue the dialog out in the open - instead of behind closed doors and in segregated company - where nothing will ever be solved, but instead worsened. Can America do that? I think the answer to that question is yes - we must if we are to move ahead and achieve what we all know is possible as a nation. He invites us to continue a debate that was initiated 221 years ago at the founding of our nation ..."at a room across the street."
