two lions silenced
no savannahs will know
their voices
old and sick
bearded kings of beasts
like Lear upon the heath
toothless and breathing heavily
the man in the zoo
shot them both
once each behind the ear
they fell as lions
ne'er are meant to fall
and lay still, still

Armed & Curious



I think that I shall never see
an octopus as smart as me
for if an eight-armed thing were intellectually
superior in any way to me
then I would be the one not free
and in a jar he'd like put me

I'd figure somehow some way out
of that you never e'er should doubt
but if the octopus were truly smarter
escape would be a real non-starter
the armey thing would snatch me back
rebottle me and leave no crack

cruel octopus cares not that I
imprisoned would soon wish to die
what thinking thing could cage another
knowing that we might be brothers
O octopus, respect my soul
what if Gawd reversed our roles?

Devils In Heaven



A bird, ten million years ago
grew teeth for snapping up its' prey
and while there's much we still don't know
we're lucky they're not here today

imagine giant bird filled skies
great shadows and great screeching cries
swooping in on little kids
toothy terrifying pela-gor-nith-ids
