CHILDREN DYING OF STARVATION 700 MILES FROM MIAMI

HURRICANES, FLOODS, WORLD FOOD CRISIS DEPRIVE HAITIANS OF SUSTENANCE

Your Neighbor Needs Your Help. Please Send Money To The Agencies Listed Below

As in the Irish Famines of the 1840's, this is not about a shortage of food. The U.S. has plenty of food, just as the English did back then. The English simply chose not to share it with their "tenants," the Irish farmers who continued to work on English-owned farms in Ireland growing plenty of food even after their own staple, potatoes, was wiped out by a blight. The English went on eating while their neighbors starved. Some people, hunh?

The U.S. has chosen to dedicate its' huge surplus agricultural capacity to the production of fuel for gas-guzzling automobiles, although there is plenty of cheaper petroleum-derived fuel. Thousands of acres of productive farmland in America are being diverted to the production of inedible corn to be used to make ethanol. Ethanol is an inefficient additive to regular gasoline which Congress has mandated and subsidized despite the fact that it uses more energy to grow and manufacture ethanol than we save by adding it to gasoline. It's a typical corporate boondoogle, supported by bribes, er, I mean, campaign contributions from Big Agra to your local corrupt, er, I mean, eternally campaigning politicians. This little dog-leg in our political process has led to a shortage of food and skyrocketing prices in the poorest countries in the world, including Haiti.

But, still, there is plenty of food. It's just too expensive for these poor countries to buy. Here we have a classic example of why markets alone don't work. It's a classic case for government intervention. Unfortunately, we don't have a government. We have a corporate board running our world today. They have made it quite clear that they do not give a slithering f*ck about you, your kids, or anybody else in the whole wide world except themselves. Since conservatives are toadying, delusional assholes who live to lick boot, and liberals are weak, wimpy conciliators who will "compromise" away their own mothers, nothing can or will be done to change our royally f*cked-up world until we adopt some new poltical way of doing things.

The Republicans had a suggestion in the last election campaign: Socialism. Hm. I don't know. But if they think it's a bad thing, there might be something to it. We just have to keep it democratic. Small "d" REALLY democratic. Not wishy-washy corporate suck-ass Democratic. First, we take over our local Democratic Party organizations. Bring ten friends to their next public meeting. Otherwise, they'll keep on listening only to the kind of corporate scum who think it's OK to starve babies.

In the meantime, please send a few bucks to the legitimate relief agencies listed below. Maybe write your political representatives, and let them know you hold them responsible for this holocaust, because they voted for the ethanol boondoggle. Go on, do it, you know you want to. It'll make you feel better about the starving kids. And it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, between all of us, against the few of them who are doing this sh*t in our name. Do it now. Please.

ABC NEWS
Children Dying in Haiti, Victims of Food Crisis

' In pockets of Haiti accessible only by donkey or foot, children are dying of malnutrition — their already meager food supply cut by a series of devastating storms that destroyed crops, wiped out livestock and sent food prices spiraling. At least 26 severely malnourished children have died in the past four weeks in the remote region of Baie d'Orange in Haiti's southeast, aid workers said Thursday, and there are fears the toll will rise much higher if help does not come quickly to the impoverished Caribbean nation. Another 65 severely malnourished children are being treated in makeshift tent clinics in the mountainous area, or at hospitals where they were evacuated in Port-au-Prince and elsewhere, said Max Cosci, who heads the Belgian contingent of Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. One evacuee, a 7-year-old girl, died while being treated, Cosci said, adding: "The situation is extremely, extremely fragile and dangerous." '
