SOUTHRON STRATEGEMS

REPUBLICAN RACISM

CODE WORDS AND THROWN ELECTIONS

How To Buy A National Election

Extended comment on Us/Them Voting at Ratboy's Anvil.

I did a little research into Third-Party Presidential candidates, back when Ross PEE-row was trying to buy the White House. I was curious as to who might benefit by his efforts, and those of 3rd men in general, since 1968. Also, who might have put them up to it, or paid for it.

George Wallace was the first character in my own lifetime to try the Third Way. Disgusted with the mainstream Kennedy Democrats efforts to de-racialize the South, the man who once swore never to lose another election by being "out-niggered" attempted to out-nigger Nixon and Johnson, then Humphrey, after LBJ threw in the Vietnam-bloodied towel.

No one took Wallace serious, outside the South. Although he did get some redneck Northern votes, over 10% in some States, mostly all he did was waste mainstream Democratic time, money and effort fighting him in their traditional Southern base. Tricky Dick took the South, except for the Deep South: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia went full-on redneck for Wallace. Humphrey took only Texas and West Virginia

Nationally, the popular vote was split 43.42% to 42.47% between Nixon and Humphrey, Wallace getting only 13.53%. Wallace took an even smaller share of electoral votes, 8.55%. But his efforts cost Humphrey enough votes to throw the election to Nixon. The final count was Nixon, 31,783,783; Humphrey, 31,271,839; Wallace, 9,901,118. As in subsequent three-way races, the incumbent lost by the narrowest of margins, thanks to the number three guy.

Half a million votes gave Nixon his "mandate" to drag the three-year-old Vietnam War on for another six years with his "secret plan for peace" (which turned out to be just dropping more bombs on North Vietnam than all the bombs dropped on Germany and Japan in WWII), and then losing the war while crippling the economy at home.

Their over-stretched effort may have cost the Dems just enough in the North to send Nixon back to DC. They lost enough votes to Wallace to lose New Jersey, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and California. That cost the Democrats the '68 election. All those States had suffered race riots. Maybe it wasn't just Charlie Manson singing "Helter Skelter." I bet Nixon had that album, too.

I began to wonder if Nixon might not have been behind the k-k-quixotic Dixiecrat campaign. He certainly benefitted by it. He even referred to a "Southern Strategy," which Republicans, out of the South since post-Reconstruction times, thanks to Lincoln, had never attempted before. Now it's a quadrennial rite.

So I looked at the subsequent Third-Party candidates, and campaigns, and their effects: All hopeless, but all fatal to the incumbent Parties, which might otherwise have won: Anderson begat Reagan, Perot begat Clinton, Nader begat Dubya. Didn't matter which Party was in the White House at the beginning of the campaigns: By the end, a Third-Party challenge had hurt the incumbents more than the other major Party, out of power, but now back in it. So, who paid? Who put them up to it? I wish I had the money to follow the money and find out.

This I do know: The Democrats paid for the Kennedy-Johnson clean-up of the old racist South. Hard-core Lincoln-haters who would NEVER have voted for a Republican suddenly became devout GOPpers, including the arch-racist leadership of the Dixiecrats, like Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms. Whole towns, counties and States switched Parties overnight, after a hundred years of stubborn Democrat voting.

The unholy alliance of liberal urban-industrial Northern immigrants and conservative rural-agrarian Southern nativists that had served five decent Democratic Presidents (Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy and Johnson) now turned to the moderate suburban corporate Northern country-clubbers and conservative small-town entrepeneurial Midwestern church-goers, to put five gawd-awful Republican Presidents into power (Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush and Bush). Even though, other than empty promises of "No New Taxes," they had nothing to offer their largely middle-class straight white male Protestant constituents than the prospect of "keeping the niggers down." For what else did Repuke code-words like "Law & Order," "Welfare Cheats," "Quota Queen," "States Rights," or "Traditional Southern Values" mean?

It was nothing but suppressed racism, stoked by deliberately encrypted, easily decrypted phraseology and imagery that got closet corporatists into power, and kept them there. That they regain and retain power despite their enmity towards the actual well-being of their constituents is further proof that their supporters vote on their prejudices, not their interests: Showing them goddamned niggers, spics, bitches and faggots who's boss. Just, not in so many words. Not in public, anyway.

To contend that this will no longer work in the "newly-multiracial" America of 2008 is a bit premature, I'm afraid. The Red States ain't so multi-racial. The Blue States have plenty of racists, too, bro. And too many non-whites, despite all the Rainbow bushwa, don't much care for other non-white groups, either; including other sects, nationalities and ethnicities within their own perceived racial, linguistic or geographical groups. So, with a judicious bit of gay-bashing, some anti-immigrant nativism, and some new-fangled anti-Arab-semitism, the Repukelickin Party could outnigger the Dems one more time. Unless Utah goes black. Just kiddin, there, you Mor-mons. Put down the chalupa!
