Tsunami victims continue to suffer from homelessness, hunger, thirst and lack of medical care. Bodies remain unburied, debris is still piling up, aftershocks in the earthquake area continue to terrify the survivors. Local governments are slow and inefficient, lacking in supplies and equipment.
Charitable and relief organizations are trying to cope, but help from regional and major powers governments has been slow to come. Meanwhile, the threat of epidemics is growing from waters polluted by decomposing human and animal bodies, and the insects feeding on them.
In times of crisis, real leaders emerge. The NGOs, the world and national relief agencies are engaged in an heroic effort. Many ordinary people all around the world have stepped in to help, in any way they can. Donations of food, clothing and medical supplies are pouring in from everywhere. Financial contributions are still desperately needed, as the most portable, and powerful tools in these Third World countries.
But where are the great nations of the World? Where are their leaders? The one remaining superpower, the richest and strongest country in the history of the world, has said little, and done less.
The triumphalist President of the United States of America is home, in Crawford Texas, basking in the dubious glory of his recent electoral fraud, and counting his spurious political capitol in corrupt, incompetent but politically reliable judges to be rammed through the Senate, even if it means dismantling that institution. He's too busy mastering the bicycle, and cutting brush, to attend to the needs of the millions of tsunami victims in fifteen or sixteen stricken, friendly countries.
The world will largely note, and long remember what little we do here. History is being written, and it will be our judge. In the last hours of its' world domination, America was simply not there when it counted. We are a nation without a leader, in a world that cries out for leadership.
