TSUNAMI UPDATE

MILLIONS HOMELESS, HUNGRY, THIRSTY, SICK, INJURED

Aid Is Slow To Come; Leadership Is Lacking

"Bush: U.S. warning system adequate"

"The United States is the largest global donor in total dollars, but one of the smallest givers among wealthy nations as a percentage of its ability to give, according to the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. See the
official OECD statistics."

"Bush Vows More U.S. Aid for Tsunami Victims"

"CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush said on Wednesday that a $35 million U.S. pledge for victims of the Asian tsunami was only the beginning and any suggestions America was stingy were 'misguided and ill-informed.'

...

Some analysts said billions of dollars in aid would likely be needed for the region.

...

In October the U.S. Congress approved $13.6 billion in domestic hurricane assistance, most of it for Florida, which was battered by major storms.

...

Canada has already approved about $33 million in Asian aid and the European Union was set to release up to 30 million euros ($40 million). The United Nations has for decades pushed for rich nations to give away 0.70 percent of gross domestic product every year in development aid. The United States gives 0.13 percent of its GDP."
