Is He Promising Not To Ride Da Bus?

This is the guy who used the term "wetbacks" in a public meeting not too long ago. His new racist offensive is targeted at foreigners whose hygiene standards may be different, or at the poor whose access to bathrooms is limited --In part by lax planning, zoning, building and housing codes and a lack of affordable housing and public facilities. Tam's our Zoning Committee Chairman, by the way, so he's responsible for a lot of that. But it's so much easier to target the disenfranchised and humiliate & punish them than it is to offer real solutions that are already available elsewhere and to people with money right here in Honolulu.

The fact that Tam has already established himself as a race-warrior with his attacks on "wetbacks" makes this new measure smell pretty bad in itself. The homeless population and immigration from global-warming and economic depression victims throughout the Asia-Pacific region keep growing, putting some less recent immigrants' and forgetful long-time Locals' noses out of joint, "Aloha" be damned. Da Bus is one of the few places where the old and the new, the poor and the middle classes come into contact. Maybe now is the time those living in comfort paid attention to the problems of the system that has benefited them so much more than others.

The solution to the unpleasant realities of poverty and disenfranchisement is not the typical conservative one of punishing the victims by criminalizing poverty, but the more liberal approach of helping people to help themselves. More affordable housing, more living-wage jobs, more public facilities for health and hygiene are a better and, in the long run, cheaper and more workable solution than locking immigrants up for smelling different, or fining homeless people for having no access to bathrooms. If you think the buses smell bad, wait till you smell the jails, the courtrooms and the prisons. But, if you're middle class, you probably never will smell them. Auwe, brah, dey steenk, ho!

' On May 13, Tam's Council Zoning Committee discussed the planned University of Hawaii-West Oahu campus in Kapolei. Tam warned the developers that labor unions are saying "that they (the developers' workers) have to be skilled, licensed workers. We don't want any, uh, wetbacks, basically." The Council's Zoning Committee, of which Tam serves as chairman, discussed development plans for UH-West Oahu on May 13 when Tam warned the developers to have better communication with labor unions. "The concern from (labor unions) is basically that they (the developers' workers) have to be skilled, licensed workers. We don't want any, uh, wetbacks, basically," Tam said. "OK. We've been receiving (reports about) developers or contractors been bringing in wetbacks from New Mexico. Uh, Mexico. I'm sorry. Mexico. OK. Illegal aliens. And that's a problem here, basically. We don't want that type. We want safety building here." "Over here in Hawaii, we're so liberal," Tam told the Star-Bulletin. "We have multiethnic cultures. We don't think in the same terms of the mainland. People look at it different. I learned something, and I apologize if I offended anybody." Tam said he first learned of the offending term through a 1950s musical called "Flower Drum Song," about Chinese illegal immigrants. From this musical, Tam said he thought the term referred to illegal immigrants. "People interpret it differently now," Tam said. "It's a terminology used in the past." '

Councilman Rod Tam and Councilman Nestor Garcia introduced the bill to regulate a number of dangerous or annoying behaviors on city buses including bad B.O. Under the bill, police could cite riders if their body odor annoyed others and a convicted offender could face up to $500 in fines or six months in prison. Tam said he's received complaints about bus B.O. "People are very concerned they don't want to get sick when they experience body odor... offensive body odor they identify it with germs, diseases," said Tam. '

Hawaii's Hypocritical Stance On Racial Violence

On the fiftieth anniversary of Hawaii's accession to Statehood, there were no official celebrations. It was feared that there would be violence, as there has been in the past. The fact that the perpetrators are a tiny and well-known minority of a minority has not led to any action by local law enforcement. This in itself is an indictment of the entire State: Deliberate official ignorance, avoidance and denial of frequent hate crimes is as bad or worse than the crimes themselves.

The centralized State school system tolerates and even allows the promotion of an annual "Kill Haole Day," when white students, "haole's," are physically and verbally attacked right inside of the public schools. Black students, or "popolo's," have also been subject to racial attacks, even including a school-sponsored and managed yearbook that featured pictures of black students with racist defacements and captions. The yearbook was edited & published by the school authorities with the racist material included. This has happened at least three times in the last ten years alone.

The fact that the State has been run almost exclusively by a local Japanese elite (who are in effect a minority within the largest minority in a population consisting entirely of minorities) for over fifty years now does nothing to ameliorate or share the collective guilt foisted upon innocent Caucasian children and adults for wrongs done, and continuing to be done, against the Native Hawaiian population. The exclusionary local elite Japanese-run State government has engineered programs since 1959 which have increasingly marginalized and hurt the health and well-being of Native Hawaiians, even as local elite Japanese politicians pander to "Local" hate-groups by blaming everything, including their own actions, on "da fahkin' howlees." Using whites as scapegoats helps to turn the attention away from the dominant local elite Japanese politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen & women and their deliberate and racist acts against the Native Hawaiians as well as "haole's" and others.

As long as Caucasians can be blamed for every problem, the local Japanese elite and their toadies in business & government can go on lining their own pockets at the expense of everyone else. As long as racism is the predominant political force here in the "Aloha State," nothing will ever change, and the problems of all the people of Hawaii, including "Locals" (local self-description of local but not Hawaiian non-white & [mainly] non-Asians) as well as Native Hawaiians.

The anemic local Republican Party and their owners & operators on the Mainland have tried to import their traditional conservative tactics of racial divide and conquer to Hawaii. The result has been a net loss for the Republicans, and a ratcheting-up of "Local" anti-white racism. The historical memory of the Overthrow, the Republic, the Annexation, the Territory, the white Ascendancy and Statehood, all Republican-engineered, will never dim as long as corporate racist Republicans from the Mainland continue trying to use Hawaii to fan flames of racial hatred and disharmony everywhere.

The despicable acts of the Republicans do not, however, excuse Hawaii's own racists. Divide and conquer along racial lines may have worked well for the local Democrats, but it is hurting the State in the long run. With an education system on a par with that of Mississippi, and a poverty-driven healthcare crisis that hits brown-skinned people hardest, only by uniting all ethnic groups can our reverse-Dixiecrats ever manage to lift Hawaii out of its' plantation-days cultural and economic slums.

' With no known hate groups and a much-trumpeted spirit of aloha or tolerance, few people outside Hawaii realize the state has a racism issue. One reason: The tourism-dependent state barely acknowledges hate crimes. That makes it hard to know how often racial violence is directed at Caucasians, who comprise about 25% of the ethnically diverse state's 1.3 million residents. Those who identify themselves as Native Hawaiian — most residents are of mixed race — account for nearly 20%. Hawaii has collected hate crimes data since 2002 (most states began doing so a decade earlier). In the first six years, the state reported only 12 hate crimes, and half of those were in 2006. (All other things being equal, the state would be expected to have more than 800 such crimes annually, given the size of its population, according to a federal government study of hate crimes.) There was anti-white bias in eight of those incidents. But that doesn't begin to reflect the extent of racial rancor directed at non-Native Hawaiians in the Aloha State, especially in schools. "Here in Hawaii, there is no compulsion to speak out on racist attacks. There are all these hate crimes and violent things happening to white people and you don't hear sovereignty activists speaking out against it," says Conklin, who manages a massive website on Hawaiian issues. "The violence has been going on for years and it's always been hush-hush." '

The world knows what Hawaii will not acknowledge.

' The current controversies are exposing racial tensions below the surface of a tropical paradise that Gov. Linda Lingle says is "a model for the world" in diversity and peaceful integration. Simmering divisions pit Hawaiians against other groups, and "locals" of all races against newcomers including immigrants and military members. At issue now is whether Hawaii will acknowledge and overcome these threats to its friendly reputation. Racial troubles in the islands usually don't get much public discussion. In a tourism-dependent state, talk about tensions is "like news about shark attacks," says Jon Van Dyke, a University of Hawaii law professor. "People are afraid they might lose customers." '

In spite of the many positive aspects of multiethnic, multiracial and multicultural interaction in Hawaii, we still have to realize ... that being black continues to be negatively perceived in Hawaii," White said. In a 1999 essay written for Punahou's school alumni magazine, Obama recalls how his first perceptions of Hawaii as being "the world's mythical melting pot" changed that by the time he graduated from Punahou, his consciousness of race was much sharper. "As an African American teenager in a school with few African Americans, I probably questioned my identify a bit harder than most," Obama wrote. "As a kid from a broken home and family of relatively modest means, I nursed more resentments than my circumstances justified and didn't always channel those resentments in particularly constructive ways." '

"Waianae High recalls yearbooks containing racial slur"

' Hundreds of Waianae High School yearbooks are being recalled to replace a page with a photograph of what school officials call a "racially offensive" word spelled out in cards held by five students in the senior class on football field bleachers. The photograph, with the racial N-word slur, was overlooked during a review of the publication, state education officials said. State education spokeswoman Sandra Goya said the recall because of a racially insensitive photograph was a first at Waianae High, but similar problems have occurred at a couple of other public schools. Stickers were placed over a racially offensive caption in a yearbook at Kalaheo High School in 1997 and a racially offensive photograph at Castle High School in 1998, Goya said. '

' Obama's experience in Hawaii is echoed by other blacks, including some of his schoolmates, and challenges the state's vaunted image of racial harmony. "A big joke amongst the brothers was you could be anything else but a brother and have free rein of the world in Hawaii," said Rik Smith, a black former schoolmate of Obama's at Punahou, an elite private school in Honolulu. "When it comes to people of color, black people, there's a huge amount of racism." In his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," Obama, who is half black and half white, recalled a seventh grader calling him a "coon" and a tennis pro who joked that his color might rub off. One person wanted to touch his hair, and he was asked whether his father, a native of Kenya, ate people. An assistant basketball coach used a racial epithet in referring to black players. '

"Hate crime not ruled out in Waikele assault"
Racism is so pervasive here that even prosecutors can't recognize an obvious hate crime. Especially not when they have political ambitions that require "Local" support. Carlisle is now running for Mayor of Honolulu.

' As debate continued over the assault on an Army couple in the parking lot of a Waikele shopping center, city Prosecutor Peter Carlisle yesterday said he had not ruled out handling the case as a hate crime. The assault remains under investigation, and the charges are up for evaluation, Carlisle said. Carlisle met with Andrew Dussell, a 26-year-old soldier, and his wife after they were allegedly beaten in the parking lot of the shopping center Feb. 19. The pair asked that their privacy be respected, and Andrew Dussell is under orders from the Army not to speak out about the case, Carlisle said. Both Andrew Dussell, who has served two tours of duty in Iraq, and his wife, Dawn Dussell, a 23-year-old nursing student at Hawai'i Pacific University, suffered broken noses, concussions and facial fractures. A police affidavit filed in court said the attack occurred after the Dussells' car collided with a vehicle while trying to pull into a parking stall. Gerald D. Paakaula, 44, and his son were arrested in connection with the assault. The father has been charged with second-degree assault; the son's case is being handled by the Family Court in confidential proceedings. The affidavit said the son was "extremely angry that his vehicle had been struck." "He began yelling obscenities toward Andrew Dussell, calling him a 'f------ haole' while kicking his driver side door," the document said. Paakaula was released after posting $20,000 bail. The police affidavit did not allege that he made any racial remarks. Much of the public debate was touched off by comments from two University of Hawai'i at Manoa professors. Jonathan Okamura, an ethnic studies professor, said he believed the alleged beating occurred or escalated as a result of racial considerations, based on the uttering of the phrase "f------ haole." But Jonathan Osorio, chairman of the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, said the case should not be classified as a hate crime and that Hawaiians should not be painted with a broad brush as a result of the incident. UH professors contacted yesterday said that while many residents see Hawai'i as a land of aloha, racial tension does exist. Many wondered if the public outcry would have been greater if a Hawaiian couple had been beaten by Caucasians, and suggested that such a circumstance would more likely have resulted in prosecutors charging the attackers with a hate crime. Carlisle said in response that race is relevant to an assault case only if it can be proven that a person selected a victim based on that person's race. '

Racists are, by the racists' own definition, people who accuse racists of being racist, or anyone who might do so. Pre-emptive racist accusations are important: Timing is everything. It's like surreptitious farting. It's important to accuse someone before they accuse you.

The problem is, the rest of the room is just sitting in shocked silence, wondering, why in the name of God is this idiot even talking about race, much less pointing out another person's race, or, worse yet, accusing THEM of racism!

It's just really bad manners in any circumstances today, thank Gawd. Of course the few remaining actual racists will refer to such manners as "political correctness." This hateful phrase refers to the fact that all the old pathological habits that racists have always enjoyed are now considered very bad manners by everyone else, worse than farting loudly in church, or malodiferously in an elevator.

That's really all the Republicans would be is a few cranky old farts, if they weren't serving as an inspiration to arsonists, bombers and murderers. Not to mention landlords, employers and authority figures who need an excuse to mess up somebody's life because of their skin color. So it's a bit more of a problem than farting. But it still makes everybody else sick.

Somehow, I don't think the Gingrich crowd quite gets this. They just squat there in their own vile stank while America holds its nose. The stench gets worse every time they open their mouths, though their little crowd never seems to notice: Except when one of them suddenly starts screaming that somebody else stinks. But of course it's just them again. Pffft. He who smelt it dealt it.

Ugh! Such rude, awful, vile, disgusting, ill-mannered people. That much has become obvious to everyone. From the smell, it won't be long before they rot away completely.

All this is, ultimately a problem for THEM, an opportunity for us.

What they don't get is that even people who don't make the connection between the more "subtle" forms of hate speech and actual racial (and sexual, homophobic, sectarian, nativist, etc) violence and discrimination still find all such speech to be as rude, crude and unacceptable as casual obscenity used to be in "polite society."

Laws and political positions are one thing, customs and manners are quite another. Outlaws and rebels are still romantic figures in this country, and we all have a right to our boring old political opinions, hoo-rah. But rudeness, crudeness and offenses against manners and customs are viewed very negatively and so will their perpetrators, their Parties and their causes be. Just as the Democrats were at one time associated with the rude and disrespectful behavior of some on the far Left, causing liberalism to become a bad word, conservatism is becoming a very bad word thanks to the really awful and unrelentingly rude and disrespectful behavior of some on the far right who are associated with Republicans. Call it a meme or a trend or a demographic shift, but it is seismic, and it could take generations to reverse once it gets going. Personally, I hope Newt, Rush et al. keep Right on farting.

I'd call it the Mom Effect. It used to be true that there were certain words and deeds that you would never say or do around your Mom, no matter how old you were. Or anybody else's Mom, for that matter. Obscenities were not to be uttered around Mom's, although words like sp*c, k*ke and n*gger were not considered obscene by everyone. That has pretty much been reversed. I hear almost every one of the Seven Dirty Words all the time every day everywhere, even from Grannies. No biggie. But you rarely hear those racial terms any more, thankfully. Just think of the kinds of things you would not say in front of your Mom, or mine, and you have a pretty good idea of what society regards as socially unacceptable and alienating.

Apparently, the Republicans don't have Moms. If they do, their Moms are in the Klan. These Republicans are like really badly raised kids who don't seem to have ever been taught any manners. Among themselves, and even in "polite society," they seem to take delight in belching forth the worst racialisms and stinking up the room with their noxious notions. They don't seem to notice that everyone else is disgusted by their behavior. They don't seem to mind that everybody is leaving the room. They actually triumph in having the room all to themselves. It doesn't bother the Republicans that the room is empty, that everyone has gone somewhere else. They're used to excluding everyone who is not like themselves. It doesn't matter to them how anyone else feels about it.

It'll matter next election day, if the Democrats don't royally screw up. You can't fight the Mom Effect. Those rude-ass Republicans are in for another spanking.

The Party Of Lincoln Is Now The Party Of The Confederacy

Ever since Richard "I Am Not A Crook" Nixon teamed up with George "I'll Never Be Out-'N*ggered'" Wallace to subvert our country's electoral process in 1968, the GOP has been the Party of hatred and racism. Their strategy has always been to divide and conquer America on behalf of wealthy traitors and multinational corporations. It has worked remarkably well: Republicans like Nixon, Ford, Reagan & Bush and Lite Republicans like Carter and Clinton have run the country into the ground for over forty years. The result is an economy in shambles, a standard of living in ruins, and a paradise for rich foreign paracites and their traitorous buddies here, like Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin, Beck, Hannity, McConnell, Boehner, Rove, Gingrich and Cheney.

The fact that most Americans now reject their race-baiting doesn't faze them. With no coherent political philosophy, wildly unpopular Party policies, and nothing positive to offer Americans they have made to suffer with their failed strategies, race is all they have left. It still appeals to their mentally ill base in the South, and wherever sad losers gather elsewhere to share teabags. With enough electoral fraud and dirty tricks, Republican racist appeals might just succeed in limiting their losses in the next few elections and guaranteeing their survival. That will give them time to plan and execute or encourage acts like 9/11 and political assassinations. In chaos, there is opportunity.

How else could a few rich fat nasty old white guys get anybody to vote for their selfish bullsh*t? Even with all the help in the world from the tame corporate media, they can't hope to win fairly. So it's back to the racialist drawing board. And it's time to tune them out for good.

' Now Judge Cedarbaum expresses concern with any analysis of women and presumably again people of color on the bench, which begins and presumably ends with the conclusion that women or minorities are different from men generally. She sees danger in presuming that judging should be gender or anything else based. She rightly points out that the perception of the differences between men and women is what led to many paternalistic laws and to the denial to women of the right to vote because we were described then "as not capable of reasoning or thinking logically" but instead of "acting intuitively." I am quoting adjectives that were bandied around famously during the suffragettes' movement.

While recognizing the potential effect of individual experiences on perception, Judge Cedarbaum nevertheless believes that judges must transcend their personal sympathies and prejudices and aspire to achieve a greater degree of fairness and integrity based on the reason of law. Although I agree with and attempt to work toward Judge Cedarbaum's aspiration, I wonder whether achieving that goal is possible in all or even in most cases. And I wonder whether by ignoring our differences as women or men of color we do a disservice both to the law and society. Whatever the reasons why we may have different perspectives, either as some theorists suggest because of our cultural experiences or as others postulate because we have basic differences in logic and reasoning, are in many respects a small part of a larger practical question we as women and minority judges in society in general must address. I accept the thesis of a law school classmate, Professor Steven Carter of Yale Law School, in his affirmative action book that in any group of human beings there is a diversity of opinion because there is both a diversity of experiences and of thought. Thus, as noted by another Yale Law School Professor -- I did graduate from there and I am not really biased except that they seem to be doing a lot of writing in that area - Professor Judith Resnik says that there is not a single voice of feminism, not a feminist approach but many who are exploring the possible ways of being that are distinct from those structured in a world dominated by the power and words of men. Thus, feminist theories of judging are in the midst of creation and are not and perhaps will never aspire to be as solidified as the established legal doctrines of judging can sometimes appear to be.

That same point can be made with respect to people of color. No one person, judge or nominee will speak in a female or people of color voice. I need not remind you that Justice Clarence Thomas represents a part but not the whole of African-American thought on many subjects. Yet, because I accept the proposition that, as Judge Resnik describes it, "to judge is an exercise of power" and because as, another former law school classmate, Professor Martha Minnow of Harvard Law School, states "there is no objective stance but only a series of perspectives - no neutrality, no escape from choice in judging," I further accept that our experiences as women and people of color affect our decisions. The aspiration to impartiality is just that--it's an aspiration because it denies the fact that we are by our experiences making different choices than others. Not all women or people of color, in all or some circumstances or indeed in any particular case or circumstance but enough people of color in enough cases, will make a difference in the process of judging. The Minnesota Supreme Court has given an example of this. As reported by Judge Patricia Wald formerly of the D.C. Circuit Court, three women on the Minnesota Court with two men dissenting agreed to grant a protective order against a father's visitation rights when the father abused his child. The Judicature Journal has at least two excellent studies on how women on the courts of appeal and state supreme courts have tended to vote more often than their male counterpart to uphold women's claims in sex discrimination cases and criminal defendants' claims in search and seizure cases. As recognized by legal scholars, whatever the reason, not one woman or person of color in any one position but as a group we will have an effect on the development of the law and on judging.

In our private conversations, Judge Cedarbaum has pointed out to me that seminal decisions in race and sex discrimination cases have come from Supreme Courts composed exclusively of white males. I agree that this is significant but I also choose to emphasize that the people who argued those cases before the Supreme Court which changed the legal landscape ultimately were largely people of color and women. I recall that Justice Thurgood Marshall, Judge Connie Baker Motley, the first black woman appointed to the federal bench, and others of the NAACP argued Brown v. Board of Education. Similarly, Justice Ginsburg, with other women attorneys, was instrumental in advocating and convincing the Court that equality of work required equality in terms and conditions of employment.

Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences, a possibility I abhor less or discount less than my colleague Judge Cedarbaum, our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging. Justice O'Connor has often been cited as saying that a wise old man and wise old woman will reach the same conclusion in deciding cases. I am not so sure Justice O'Connor is the author of that line since Professor Resnik attributes that line to Supreme Court Justice Coyle. I am also not so sure that I agree with the statement. First, as Professor Martha Minnow has noted, there can never be a universal definition of wise. Second, I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.

Let us not forget that wise men like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Justice Cardozo voted on cases which upheld both sex and race discrimination in our society. Until 1972, no Supreme Court case ever upheld the claim of a woman in a gender discrimination case. I, like Professor Carter, believe that we should not be so myopic as to believe that others of different experiences or backgrounds are incapable of understanding the values and needs of people from a different group. Many are so capable. As Judge Cedarbaum pointed out to me, nine white men on the Supreme Court in the past have done so on many occasions and on many issues including Brown.

However, to understand takes time and effort, something that not all people are willing to give. For others, their experiences limit their ability to understand the experiences of others. Other simply do not care. Hence, one must accept the proposition that a difference there will be by the presence of women and people of color on the bench. Personal experiences affect the facts that judges choose to see. My hope is that I will take the good from my experiences and extrapolate them further into areas with which I am unfamiliar. I simply do not know exactly what that difference will be in my judging. But I accept there will be some based on my gender and my Latina heritage. '

First of all, dump NewsCorp stock. Arrange to purge News Corp from all financial holdings and demand that all investment organizations do the same-- stock brokers, mutual funds, pension funds, IRA's, 401k's, trusts, college funds, university endowments, etc, cleansed of NewsCorp immediately. Hit them where it hurts, in their wallets. Hurt them bad. Shut them down.

When a foreign agent enters our country and attempts to sabotage our political system and bring down our government, it's time to act. Radical right-wing "businessman" Rupert Murdoch was flushed out of his native Australia years ago. He is no longer welcome in his next refuge, England, where he is regarded as an outright fascist and a life-long enemy of all democracy. He has been allowed to break, bend and bribe his way around anti-monopoly, anti-media consolidation, fairness and foreign-ownership laws and regulations for decades now in America. Successive Republican Administrations have kow-towed to this slimy foreigner for years.

His response has been to grab and exercise more and more power in the United States of America. After suffering a serious blow to his arch-conservative corporatist agenda in our first full, free and fair election in eight years, Murdoch has called the President of the United States a "chimpanzee" and called for his assassination. He belongs in Guantanamo Bay. His media empire must be broken up and dissolved immediately. His whole gang of America-hating crypto-fascists should follow him to prison forthwith.

Legitimate political discourse is one thing. Deliberate poisoning of that discourse is quite another thing. Murdoch's repeatedly calling for violent action by this country's already enflamed racists is criminal. Rupert Murdoch and NewsCorp have to go, now. Divest yourself of all holdings in NewsCorp, boycott their newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations, TV & radio networks, movie studios and all their advertisers, sponsors, underwriters and investors. Demand that those who manage your money and entitlements do the same, or you will boycott them. Do it now. Please.

' Whether or not the boycott works to any meaningful degree is going to depend on how many more advertisers decide it is easier to switch than fight. According to radio buyers, some companies cave almost instantly in the face of even a little negative feedback while others need to experience a truly sustained and widespread level of complaints before they listen. Still, they don't have to get them all to make a difference: If enough advertisers put out the word that the show is a forbidden zone -- and they are not rapidly replaced -- the program will lose much of its economic value to local stations and station groups regardless of how well its audience numbers are doing. Of course, the already-loaded Limbaugh is never going to have trouble putting food on the table, but he and his fans could end up in less desirable timeslots or on fewer outlets. '

Mississippi John McCain Refuses To Acknowledge Black Relatives, History; Won't Attend Reunions Of His Own Family

John Sydney McCain III's racist attitudes and campaign tactics begin to make a little more sense when you read his history. He's not a native of racist Arizona, where he opposed the institution of the Martin Luther King holiday. McCain was born in a segregated military base in Panama, and raised, in part, in Teoc, Mississippi, his family's ancestral home. His great-grandfather was a Confederate soldier, which led McCain to oppose removing the Stars & Bars from the State flag, citing "tradition." The tradition included, and in fact was based on, buying, selling and ruthlessly exploiting human beings with black skin. McCain's great-grandfather and other McCain's were slave-owners and slave-traders in Mississippi.

Whether John McCain himself has black blood is a matter for the geneticists to work out. It is of little interest, except to his racist supporters. It is ironic that he finds himself running against another man of "mixed" ancestry, a man whose own father came from Africa. The McCain campaign has made much of Obama's African ancestry. The Republicans have also tried to smear Obama by digging up Obama's distant African relatives, and claiming that Obama has neglected or refused to acknowledge them. Yet here we have McCain himself neglecting and refusing to acknowledge his whole family, even the whites who accept their black cousins and acknowledge their troubled shared past in an attempt at reconciliation.

As the historic 2008 U.S. Presidential campaign draws to a close, the true histories of the two candidates provide insight into their character and their future conduct. As a man of the people, son of an immigrant, a minority within a minority who pulled himself up by his own bootstraps and worked his way to the top, Barack Hussein Obama exemplifies the American Dream, and holds out a shining example of true democracy to the entire world. He knows what it is like to struggle and do without, and he can be relied upon to represent the interests of all those who struggle and do without in hopes of a better life.

John McCain is a man of wealth and power, a son of privilege, an hereditary member of the ruling elite who slacked off and relied on his family connections all his life, finishing by abandoning his crippled wife and children to run away and live off a rich, drug-addicted woman. Now he is appealing to the worst elements of the American polity in a desperate grab for power. John Sydney McCain III is a banana Republican, and hardly an American at all: Certainly no example to the rest of us. He represents the worst of our past, and no future at all.

Unlike Obama, McCain neither knows nor cares what it is like for the rest of us to have to struggle daily to provide our families with food and shelter, health care and transportation, education and some kind of a future. John Sidney McCain III, of the Mississippi McCain's, is, by his own admission, wholly ignorant of every element of the real lives of ordinary Americans. His knee-jerk defense and support of the interests of corporations and wealthy individuals like himself is in direct opposition to the interests of the rest of us: Hard-working Americans who need a defender in Washington like Obama who will fight for our interests, not against them as McCain has done all his life.

The choice is simple: The dark, racist past of privilege and abusive, untrammeled wealth & power, the parasitic few lording it over us all; or a bright, inclusive, tolerant, diverse, truly democratic future of economic fairness and equal justice for all, where we take control of our own destiny, and manage our country for our own benefit, all of us. It's all there in black and white.

' Since the advent of the Southern Strategy under Nixon, the Republican Party has embraced its role as the Party of White Privilege. John McCain has made a modest career out of making rumbling noises toward some of the uglier aspects of this legacy within the GOP, and he's hoping that those rumbles will be enough to persuade moderate voters to back him. However, the cold realities of the history of race relations in America -- dating back to those dark eons when black women held in slavery were routinely raped and impregnated by their white owners -- still hover like a dark cloud over whites' vision of Golden Age America, the very vision that John McCain and Sarah Palin like to sell to their flocks like so much Coca-Cola. So it's perhaps not a surprise that, given the chance to banish that cloud by doing the human thing, the right thing, and embracing the black side of the McCain family, the Straight Talking Senator From Arizona chose essentially to run from them and hide. Because acknowledging them not only was too painful, but might prove too harmful to his chances of success in a political party predicated on white privilege. '

' Lillie McCain, 56, a professor of psychology in Flint, Michigan, traces her lineage from two of more than 120 black slaves before the end of the Civil War at Teoc, the Mississippi plantation owned by the family of Republican nominee John McCain's great-great-grandfather. Lillie McCain's family is descended from two slaves, named Isom and Lettie, according to interviews and examinations of family documents, county files and U.S. Census Bureau records. According to members of the white McCain family, the plantation was purchased by Mr McCain's great-great-grandfather, William Alexander McCain, in 1851. "We've had the pleasure of meeting Joe McCain," she said, "He attends the reunions at Teoc ... I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Senator McCain. "I heard him say on, I believe it was Meet the Press, that his ancestors owned no slaves. Well, I certainly have carried the name McCain from the beginning of my life, and I've known the ties to John McCain, and have tried to get him to communicate with me about that, but he has been unwilling at least to date." Miss McCain urged John McCain to "acknowledge the reality of the relationship that we hold." "I am absolutely supporting Obama, and it's not because he's black," said Lillie. "It's because he is the best person at this time in our history." '

' The family's storied military history stretches back to Carroll County, Miss., where McCain's great-great grandfather William Alexander McCain owned a plantation, and later died during the Civil War as a soldier for the Mississippi cavalry. But what McCain didn't know about his family until Tuesday was that William Alexander McCain had owned 52 slaves. The senator seemed surprised after Salon reporters showed him documents gathered from Carroll County Courthouse, the Carrollton Merrill Museum, the Mississippi State Archives and the Greenwood, Miss., Public Library. "I didn't know that," McCain said in measured tones wearing a stoic expression during a midday interview, as he looked at the documents before Tuesday night's debate. "I knew they had sharecroppers. I did not know that." "It's very impactful," he said of learning the news. "When you think about it, they owned a plantation, why didn't I think about that before? Obviously, I'm going to have to do a little more research." '

' One of the slaves was Roy McCain's great-great-grandmother, Evelyn McCain. She never married but had four children. "They were mixed kids by the slaveowner and her," Roy McCain said, speaking of William's brother, Joe. "They were bi-racial." Such relationships were neither confirmed nor denied by the Wall Street Journal when it published a profile of the family two weeks ago. But reporter Douglas Blackmon noted that the black and white McCain families have long acknowledged their shared history. Sen. McCain's younger brother, also named Joe, and other white McCains have attended family reunions organized by the black McCains. "The black McCains were raised to believe that they were blood relatives of the white McCains dating back to slavery," Blackmon wrote. "White McCains say they're unaware of any biological connection between the families. A spokesman for Sen. McCain declined to comment." '

' In the rural Teoc community of Carroll County, Miss., where the ancestors of Sen. John McCain owned enslaved Africans on a plantation, black, white and mixed-race family members unite every two years for their Coming Home Reunion, on the land where the plantation operated. Some of McCain’s black family members say they are not sure exactly where they fall on the family tree, but they do know this: They are either descendants of the McCain family slaves, or of children the McCains fathered with their slaves. White and black members of the McCain family have met on the plantation several times over the last 15 years, but one invited guest has been conspicuously absent: Sen. John Sidney McCain. “Why he hasn’t come is anybody’s guess,” said Charles McCain Jr., 60, a distant cousin of John McCain who is black. “I think the best I can come up with, is that he doesn’t have time, or he has just distanced himself, or it doesn’t mean that much to him.” Other relatives are not as generous. Lillie McCain, 56, another distant cousin of John McCain who is black, said the Republican presidential nominee is trying to hide his past, and refuses to accept the family’s history. “After hearing him in 2000 claim his family never owned slaves, I sent him an email,” she recalled. “I told him no matter how much he denies it, it will not make it untrue, and he should accept this and embrace it.” She said the senator never responded to her email.The McCain campaign did not respond to repeated questions about John McCain’s black relatives, or about his relatives of both races who support Obama. Pablo Carrillo, a media liaison with the McCain campaign, said the senator was aware of his African-American relatives, but asked the reporter to put his questions into writing, and that someone would get back to him. After the reporter sent questions in writing, and made repeated follow-up phone calls, neither Sen. McCain nor anyone else from the campaign responded. Based on information obtained by the South Florida Times, the senator has numerous black and mixed-raced relatives who were born on, or in, the area of the McCain plantation. The mixed races in the family can be traced back to the rural Teoc community of Carroll County, Miss., where his family owned slaves. Sen. John McCain’s great, great grandfather, William Alexander McCain (1812-1863), fought for the Confederacy and owned a 2,000-acre plantation named Waverly in Teoc. The family dealt in the slave trade, and, according to official records, held at least 52 slaves on the family’s plantation. The enslaved Africans were likely used as servants, for labor, and for breeding more slaves. William McCain’s son, and Sen. John McCain’s great grandfather, John Sidney McCain (1851-1934), eventually assumed the duty of running the family’s plantation. W.A. “Bill” McCain IV, a white McCain cousin, and his wife Edwina, are the current owners of the land. Both told the South Florida Times that they attend the reunions. They also said the McCain campaign had asked them not to speak to the media about the reunions, or about why the senator has never acknowledged the family gatherings. In addition to distancing himself from his black family members, John McCain has taken several positions on issues that have put him at odds with members of the larger black community. While running for the Republican Party nomination in 2000, he sided with protesters who were calling for the rebel battle flag to be removed from the South Carolina statehouse, only to alter that position later. "Some view it as a symbol of slavery. Others view it as a symbol of heritage,” John McCain said of the flag. "Personally, I see the battle flag as a symbol of heritage. I have ancestors who have fought for the Confederacy, none of whom owned slaves. I believe they fought honorably.’’ Novelist Elizabeth Spencer, another white cousin of John McCain, noted the slaves the family owned in the family’s memoirs, Landscapes of the Heart. Sen. McCain has acknowledged reading the book, but claims to have only glossed over entries about their slaves. “That’s crazy,” said Spencer, who also attends the reunions in Teoc. “No one had to tell us, because we all knew about the slaves. I may not vote, because I don’t want anyone to think that I have an issue with John, but I don’t want to see him become president because I think Obama is entirely adequate, and it’s time for a Democrat.’’ Sen. John McCain was born in 1936 at the Coco Solo Naval Air Station, a segregated military installation in the Panama Canal, where his father was stationed in the U.S. Navy. His family returned to the states shortly after his birth; where he went on to attend segregated schools in the Teoc community and elsewhere around the country. He served in the Navy, where he was a prisoner of war during Vietnam, before being released and eventually running for Congress. After he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, McCain voted against the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday in 1983. When he arrived in the U.S. Senate in 1986, he joined North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms in opposing the holiday again, and voted in 1994 to cut funding to the commission that marketed it. John McCain also aligned himself with former Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham. Mecham was the governor in McCain’s home state of Arizona from January 1987 to April 1988, when he was impeached and removed from office for campaign finance violations. As a state senator and governor, Mecham publicly used racial slurs against black people and other minorities. He was also a member of the John Birch Society, which opposes civil rights legislation. In 1986, Mecham campaigned for governor on a promise to rescind the state’s recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, which he did in 1987. “He is denying his black and white relatives in Teoc,” said Joyce McCain, 54. “I think he may not want the country to know his family’s full history, but times have changed and we need to move on, and that’s why I’m supporting Obama.” '

' Tracing the genealogies of slaves is often easy, because slaves frequently adopted the surnames of their owners. In 1876, for example, a Mary J. McCain married Isham Hurt. The two had a son, blues guitarist "Mississippi" John Hurt, in 1892 on Teoc, the plantation community where the McCains owned 2,000 acres. "Is that right?" McCain asked, after considering his possible connection to the famous bluesman, who died in 1966. "That's fascinating," he said.
