Much has been made of the fact that Barack Hussein Obama's father was born in Kenya, and that his mother divorced the Dad and remarried a man in Indonesia, where Obama then went to live. But Barack was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, as his birth records show, and his mother was always a U.S. citizen.

John Sidney McCain III was born somewhere in Latin America, supposedly on a shadowy military facility in the jungles of Panama. Was it foreign soil? Are there any records? Who were his real mother and father? Is there any proof of his parentage? Or was his birth deliberately moved to Central America to conceal his true origins? Was his actual mother a Panamanian prostitute? Was his true father a Columbian gigolo? Does anyone really know? Who is John McCain?

He claims to be the same person who was arrested and imprisoned by the Vietnamese government for terror-bombing Vietnamese children. He says he was brainwashed by them, and forced to make propaganda for them. Did his programming include taking over the United States of America? To what end? Can he be trusted today? Has he ever been de-programmed? By whom? For what purpose? Is he a Manchurian Candidate, bent upon our destruction, possibly a communist, islamist or fascist dupe? How do we know?

Until these questions are answered, McCain is or should be ineligible to serve as President of the United States. His unqualified lunatic choice for next-in-line for the Presidency, Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, currently under investigation in Alaska, is an advocate of secession from the Union, which is treasonous. If she attempts to take over the government, military and law enforcement officers would be duty-bound to arrest and imprison her. That would leave us without a President, until Nancy Pelosi, next in line as Speaker of the House of Representatives, could step in. If our enemies don't step in first.

Would we rather have Nancy Pelosi appointed or Barack Obama elected as President? That is the real choice. America cannot stand any more chaos and uncertainty. To avoid all this, we have no choice but to elect the only competent loyal American born in this country that is still in the race and eligible to take the office of the Presidency, Barack Obama. Mississippi John McCain Refuses To Acknowledge Black Relatives, History; Won't Attend Reunions Of His Own Family

John Sydney McCain III's racist attitudes and campaign tactics begin to make a little more sense when you read his history. He's not a native of racist Arizona, where he opposed the institution of the Martin Luther King holiday. McCain was born in a segregated military base in Panama, and raised, in part, in Teoc, Mississippi, his family's ancestral home. His great-grandfather was a Confederate soldier, which led McCain to oppose removing the Stars & Bars from the State flag, citing "tradition." The tradition included, and in fact was based on, buying, selling and ruthlessly exploiting human beings with black skin. McCain's great-grandfather and other McCain's were slave-owners and slave-traders in Mississippi.

Whether John McCain himself has black blood is a matter for the geneticists to work out. It is of little interest, except to his racist supporters. It is ironic that he finds himself running against another man of "mixed" ancestry, a man whose own father came from Africa. The McCain campaign has made much of Obama's African ancestry. The Republicans have also tried to smear Obama by digging up Obama's distant African relatives, and claiming that Obama has neglected or refused to acknowledge them. Yet here we have McCain himself neglecting and refusing to acknowledge his whole family, even the whites who accept their black cousins and acknowledge their troubled shared past in an attempt at reconciliation.

As the historic 2008 U.S. Presidential campaign draws to a close, the true histories of the two candidates provide insight into their character and their future conduct. As a man of the people, son of an immigrant, a minority within a minority who pulled himself up by his own bootstraps and worked his way to the top, Barack Hussein Obama exemplifies the American Dream, and holds out a shining example of true democracy to the entire world. He knows what it is like to struggle and do without, and he can be relied upon to represent the interests of all those who struggle and do without in hopes of a better life.

John McCain is a man of wealth and power, a son of privilege, an hereditary member of the ruling elite who slacked off and relied on his family connections all his life, finishing by abandoning his crippled wife and children to run away and live off a rich, drug-addicted woman. Now he is appealing to the worst elements of the American polity in a desperate grab for power. John Sydney McCain III is a banana Republican, and hardly an American at all: Certainly no example to the rest of us. He represents the worst of our past, and no future at all.

Unlike Obama, McCain neither knows nor cares what it is like for the rest of us to have to struggle daily to provide our families with food and shelter, health care and transportation, education and some kind of a future. John Sidney McCain III, of the Mississippi McCain's, is, by his own admission, wholly ignorant of every element of the real lives of ordinary Americans. His knee-jerk defense and support of the interests of corporations and wealthy individuals like himself is in direct opposition to the interests of the rest of us: Hard-working Americans who need a defender in Washington like Obama who will fight for our interests, not against them as McCain has done all his life.

The choice is simple: The dark, racist past of privilege and abusive, untrammeled wealth & power, the parasitic few lording it over us all; or a bright, inclusive, tolerant, diverse, truly democratic future of economic fairness and equal justice for all, where we take control of our own destiny, and manage our country for our own benefit, all of us. It's all there in black and white.

' Since the advent of the Southern Strategy under Nixon, the Republican Party has embraced its role as the Party of White Privilege. John McCain has made a modest career out of making rumbling noises toward some of the uglier aspects of this legacy within the GOP, and he's hoping that those rumbles will be enough to persuade moderate voters to back him. However, the cold realities of the history of race relations in America -- dating back to those dark eons when black women held in slavery were routinely raped and impregnated by their white owners -- still hover like a dark cloud over whites' vision of Golden Age America, the very vision that John McCain and Sarah Palin like to sell to their flocks like so much Coca-Cola. So it's perhaps not a surprise that, given the chance to banish that cloud by doing the human thing, the right thing, and embracing the black side of the McCain family, the Straight Talking Senator From Arizona chose essentially to run from them and hide. Because acknowledging them not only was too painful, but might prove too harmful to his chances of success in a political party predicated on white privilege. '

' Lillie McCain, 56, a professor of psychology in Flint, Michigan, traces her lineage from two of more than 120 black slaves before the end of the Civil War at Teoc, the Mississippi plantation owned by the family of Republican nominee John McCain's great-great-grandfather. Lillie McCain's family is descended from two slaves, named Isom and Lettie, according to interviews and examinations of family documents, county files and U.S. Census Bureau records. According to members of the white McCain family, the plantation was purchased by Mr McCain's great-great-grandfather, William Alexander McCain, in 1851. "We've had the pleasure of meeting Joe McCain," she said, "He attends the reunions at Teoc ... I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Senator McCain. "I heard him say on, I believe it was Meet the Press, that his ancestors owned no slaves. Well, I certainly have carried the name McCain from the beginning of my life, and I've known the ties to John McCain, and have tried to get him to communicate with me about that, but he has been unwilling at least to date." Miss McCain urged John McCain to "acknowledge the reality of the relationship that we hold." "I am absolutely supporting Obama, and it's not because he's black," said Lillie. "It's because he is the best person at this time in our history." '

But what McCain didn't know about his family until Tuesday was that William Alexander McCain had owned 52 slaves. The senator seemed surprised after Salon reporters showed him documents gathered from Carroll County Courthouse, the Carrollton Merrill Museum, the Mississippi State Archives and the Greenwood, Miss., Public Library. "I didn't know that," McCain said in measured tones wearing a stoic expression during a midday interview, as he looked at the documents before Tuesday night's debate. "I knew they had sharecroppers. I did not know that." "It's very impactful," he said of learning the news. "When you think about it, they owned a plantation, why didn't I think about that before? Obviously, I'm going to have to do a little more research." '

' In the rural Teoc community of Carroll County, Miss., where the ancestors of Sen. John McCain owned enslaved Africans on a plantation, black, white and mixed-race family members unite every two years for their Coming Home Reunion, on the land where the plantation operated. Some of McCain’s black family members say they are not sure exactly where they fall on the family tree, but they do know this: They are either descendants of the McCain family slaves, or of children the McCains fathered with their slaves. White and black members of the McCain family have met on the plantation several times over the last 15 years, but one invited guest has been conspicuously absent: Sen. John Sidney McCain. “Why he hasn’t come is anybody’s guess,” said Charles McCain Jr., 60, a distant cousin of John McCain who is black. “I think the best I can come up with, is that he doesn’t have time, or he has just distanced himself, or it doesn’t mean that much to him.” Other relatives are not as generous. Lillie McCain, 56, another distant cousin of John McCain who is black, said the Republican presidential nominee is trying to hide his past, and refuses to accept the family’s history. “After hearing him in 2000 claim his family never owned slaves, I sent him an email,” she recalled. “I told him no matter how much he denies it, it will not make it untrue, and he should accept this and embrace it.” She said the senator never responded to her email.The McCain campaign did not respond to repeated questions about John McCain’s black relatives, or about his relatives of both races who support Obama. Pablo Carrillo, a media liaison with the McCain campaign, said the senator was aware of his African-American relatives, but asked the reporter to put his questions into writing, and that someone would get back to him. After the reporter sent questions in writing, and made repeated follow-up phone calls, neither Sen. McCain nor anyone else from the campaign responded. Based on information obtained by the South Florida Times, the senator has numerous black and mixed-raced relatives who were born on, or in, the area of the McCain plantation. The mixed races in the family can be traced back to the rural Teoc community of Carroll County, Miss., where his family owned slaves. Sen. John McCain’s great, great grandfather, William Alexander McCain (1812-1863), fought for the Confederacy and owned a 2,000-acre plantation named Waverly in Teoc. The family dealt in the slave trade, and, according to official records, held at least 52 slaves on the family’s plantation. The enslaved Africans were likely used as servants, for labor, and for breeding more slaves. William McCain’s son, and Sen. John McCain’s great grandfather, John Sidney McCain (1851-1934), eventually assumed the duty of running the family’s plantation. W.A. “Bill” McCain IV, a white McCain cousin, and his wife Edwina, are the current owners of the land. Both told the South Florida Times that they attend the reunions. They also said the McCain campaign had asked them not to speak to the media about the reunions, or about why the senator has never acknowledged the family gatherings. In addition to distancing himself from his black family members, John McCain has taken several positions on issues that have put him at odds with members of the larger black community. While running for the Republican Party nomination in 2000, he sided with protesters who were calling for the rebel battle flag to be removed from the South Carolina statehouse, only to alter that position later. "Some view it as a symbol of slavery. Others view it as a symbol of heritage,” John McCain said of the flag. "Personally, I see the battle flag as a symbol of heritage. I have ancestors who have fought for the Confederacy, none of whom owned slaves. I believe they fought honorably.’’ Novelist Elizabeth Spencer, another white cousin of John McCain, noted the slaves the family owned in the family’s memoirs, Landscapes of the Heart. Sen. McCain has acknowledged reading the book, but claims to have only glossed over entries about their slaves. “That’s crazy,” said Spencer, who also attends the reunions in Teoc. “No one had to tell us, because we all knew about the slaves. I may not vote, because I don’t want anyone to think that I have an issue with John, but I don’t want to see him become president because I think Obama is entirely adequate, and it’s time for a Democrat.’’ Sen. John McCain was born in 1936 at the Coco Solo Naval Air Station, a segregated military installation in the Panama Canal, where his father was stationed in the U.S. Navy. His family returned to the states shortly after his birth; where he went on to attend segregated schools in the Teoc community and elsewhere around the country. He served in the Navy, where he was a prisoner of war during Vietnam, before being released and eventually running for Congress. After he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, McCain voted against the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday in 1983. When he arrived in the U.S. Senate in 1986, he joined North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms in opposing the holiday again, and voted in 1994 to cut funding to the commission that marketed it. John McCain also aligned himself with former Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham. Mecham was the governor in McCain’s home state of Arizona from January 1987 to April 1988, when he was impeached and removed from office for campaign finance violations. As a state senator and governor, Mecham publicly used racial slurs against black people and other minorities. He was also a member of the John Birch Society, which opposes civil rights legislation. In 1986, Mecham campaigned for governor on a promise to rescind the state’s recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, which he did in 1987. “He is denying his black and white relatives in Teoc,” said Joyce McCain, 54. “I think he may not want the country to know his family’s full history, but times have changed and we need to move on, and that’s why I’m supporting Obama.” '

It's Very Unpleasant, The Republican Aroma Of Abject Failure. It Smells Like . . . Bush.

As John Sidney "POW" McCain III slowly sinks into the political abyss, his overweaningly ambitious running mate makes one last frenzied attempt to claw her way to the top. Promised a virtual or actual Presidency if she can just salvage the wreck of McSame's campaign, airhead Sarah Palin is now resorting to outright smears based on bald-faced lies.

Still, McBush has already conceded Michigan, and Pennsylvania may be next: Poor old broke-down John "My Wife's A 'Cunt' " McCain has pulled out of the Republican-depressed Automobile State. The poor old guy went to hide in Iowa rather than show his cancerous face in the anxious blue-collar Steel State. He's trailing even in GOP-subverted Florida. McSame may lose formerly reliable-racist Republican Virginia. Can Indiana and Ohio be far behind?

The Repukelickin Party, terrified of losing its' death-grip on power, is going straight to its' last resort: The Party of Greed and Anger, is switching gears to its' old fallbacks, Hatred and Fear. "Obama is not like us" (he's black!), "Obama hates America" (HE'S BLACK!!), "Obama pals around with bad men from the Big City" (HE'S BLAAAAACK!!!). Did they mention that Barack is black? Not yet, not explicitly. They're cowardly little racist, race-baiting assholes; always have been. But their message has always been the same: "Law & order," "Welfare queens," "Willie Horton," et cetera, ad nauseum, always meant "We'll keep the niggers down for ya, Bubba!" and absolutely nothing more. It's code that even right-wing morons can understand.

This year, not without trepidation, the Democrats have shown the courage and strength of character to confront racism head on, and nominate a man of African ancestry to be our next President. The Republicans, meanwhile, have shown their true colors by nominating two extremely white people, both known for their anti-African-American sentiments. McCain played the "maverick" by opposing the institution of the Federal Holiday honoring martyred moderate black leader Dr. Martin Luthor King Jr. Sarah Palin was deliberately chosen, it is now obvious, for being the living embodiment of redneck ignorance, and white-State prejudice. (Oh, and the "c*nt vote." Since McCain thinks all women are "c*nts," he must figure having a real "c*nt" on the ticket will get their votes.)

The Repukelickin' candidates are cowardly and without a shred of real character. McCain betrayed his country by collaborating with the enemy in North Vietnamese communist propaganda during the Vietnam War. When he came home from Nam, McSame dumped the crippled wife who had waited faithfully for him for five long lonely years, and flitted off with a rich drug-addicted beer queen. McCain's new wife Cindy was then busted for stealing drugs from poor, sick children. McCain himself narrowly escaped indictment during the Savings & Loan scandal. What character!

Palin flies her whole family around the country at taxpayer expense, and collects thousands in per diem for sleeping in her own bed. She fired a respected Alaska State Police commander when he refused to fire her sister's ex-husband, a decorated State Trooper. Now she doesn't dare show her face in Alaska, and the national Republican Party organisation of John McBush is running Alaska in her absence, trying to supress the investigation of "Troopergate." Let's not even talk about her under-aged, unmarried, unsafe-sexually-active daughter, or the infant Governor Palin starved in her own womb, trying to hide her own recent pregnancy. The child was born retarded, and now she uses him to gain sympathy at every campaign stop. Doesn't she worry about his health at all? Or his dignity? Or ours?

As to hating America, and terrorism: Palin wants Alaska to secede from the Union, and break up our great nation. She keeps talking about the Russians, her "neighbors": Maybe she wants to join them? Unlike most Americans she's wallowing in oil money, overjoyed at the high prices. Maybe the Rooskies will offer her a better deal. Traitor? You be the judge.

McCain has voted against going after Osama Bin Laden, and has done nothing to protect us from 9/11's past, present or future. He's so rich and out of touch, he doesn't even know how many houses he owns. And, of course, he could be a "Manchurian Candidate," programmed by the Communists to destroy America from inside the Oval Office. And none dare call it treason?

I guess McPalin fears that all this will come out in the next few weeks. After all, that's how they play the game. So far, Obama has chosen to take the high road. But it's time for the rest of us to give the Repuke's a taste of their own foul medicine. In their case, the truth about them will suffice.

Historic Selections Close Old Wounds, Open New Ones

As the Democratic Party took one small step into the future, the Republicans took one giant leap into the past. The United States of America is the first world power to nominate a member of a minority group, a subjugated race, a former slave-people, to become its' leader, and the leader of the "Free World." That term may have some meaning again now that Barack Obama is wielding it.

The fact that Barack Obama is a brilliant man, dedicated to his roots, his community, his faith and his family should not be counted against him, whatever the tame corporate media say to please their masters. The fact that his father, his wife, and his two adorable little daughters are black will, of course, be counted against them by the media, the Republican Party, John Sidney McCain III of the Mississippi McCains, and other racists. The fact that, although he is a committed Christian, his name, and his father, are of Muslim origin, will be used to damn him by the same foul elements listed above.

But Americans have grown up. As Martin Luther King said, in speaking for all of us exactly forty-five years ago, a hundred years after Emancipation, we have had a dream for centuries, millenia, we the brotherhood and sisterhood of Humanity: That one day, a man or a woman might be judged by the content of their character, and not by the color of their skin, or any other superficial prejudices.

Meanwhile, back in the oil patch, the corporate-controlled GOP have chosen to roll back the clock to a point before even George "Dubya" Bush's neolithic advent. Cynically hoping to cash in on her gender, McSame has picked a woman with two years experience in Alaska State politics.

Palin is best known for her support for drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge, and for the oil industry in general. She is also even more irresponsible and farther to the right than Dubya or his clone McCain: She opposes Bush's designation of the polar bear as an endangered species. Guess we know where she stands on global warming, hunh, this ice-cave-woman? She also happens to be anti-Choice, pro-gun, pro-war, and a former "Beauty Queen," i.e., unreconstructed bimbo. (That's McCain's idea of a real woman. Just look at his druggy wife, an aging bimbo.)

Barack Obama and John Biden, by contrast, have taken many strong and principled stands on energy and the environment over their many years in National politics. They offer a clear choice between the future and the past, responsibility and recklessness, good stewardship and raping the land. Republicans have managed to choose two "conservative mavericks" who can be counted on to continue the failed policies of George W. Bush, and even roll them back farther into ancient, awful history.

Then there's the ethics issues: Obama and Biden have spotless records, and no ties to lobbyists. McCain & Palin are owned by coporate lobbyists, and both have been charged with major ethics violations. So it's either a new era for clean government run by the People, or the recurring nightmare of Republican corruption and corporate control.

The choice for voters is clear. Given the youth of Obama, and the age of McCain, in two or three years it will either be Barack or Palin in the oval office. So that's who you're voting for. A moderate, mainstream, progressive striver from the Heartland, or a radical right-wing crook from the crookedest State of all, far-off Alaska, the Siberia of American politics. Don't get fooled again. Let's keep Big Oil the Hell out of the White House!

' Obama began his speech recalling his parents’ belief in the American promise that, “through hard work and sacrifice,” their son could “do whatever he set his mind to.” That promise, “that has always set this country apart,” is now threatened by eight years of the “failed presidency” of President Bush, he said. “Tonight, more Americans are out of work and more are working harder for less. More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet. More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit-card bills you can’t afford to pay, and tuition that is beyond your reach,” he said. “America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.” He added that “now is no time for small plans.” And he pledged to “set a clear goal as president: in 10 years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.” Obama berated McCain’s repeated calls to “drill more, drill now” as “a stop-gap measure, not a long-term solution. Not even close.” That was just part of the sustained attack on the presumed Republican nominee, from his decision to support the invasion of Iraq to his overall support of the Bush administration’s policies. “Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than 90 percent of the time?” Obama told the crowd, to cheers. He also questioned whether McCain really wanted to follow Mr. Bush’s example of “tough talk and bad strategy,” but said it was “his choice.” Obama then tried to lay to rest the stereotype that Democrats are not as tough as Republicans on national security. “We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy,” he said. “So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country. Don’t tell me that Democrats won’t keep us safe. The Bush-McCain foreign policy has squandered the legacy that generations of Americans – Democrats and Republicans – have built, and we are to restore that legacy.” '

' If McCain hoped to stop Democrats from getting much mileage out of the oil issue in this presidential election, he picked the wrong vice presidential candidate. His choice, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, comes from a state whose lifeblood is oil. Palin favors opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development, something McCain opposes. Her family even gets one of its paychecks from the oil industry: Palin's husband, Todd Palin, earned $46,790 last year as a facility operator for BP Alaska in Prudhoe Bay. Palin opposes the Bush administration's decision to list polar bears as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Alaska sued Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne earlier this month to try to overturn his decision. Palin argues there isn't enough evidence to support a listing, and she fears it will harm oil and gas development in prime polar bear habitat off Alaska's northern and northwestern coasts. The Legislature is investigating her firing of the state public safety commissioner. A legislative oversight committee wants to know if the commissioner was dismissed because he refused to fire a trooper who went through a messy divorce from Palin's sister. The investigation is expected to wrap up around election time. Campaign contributions Palin collected earlier in her political career could also provide fodder for Democratic campaign ads, tying her to an Alaska Republican political scandal from which she has tried to distance herself. George "Dubya" Bush lost Abkhazia and S. Ossetia to Vladimir Putin's crypto-Communist-KGB regime this week. Thanks to the Republican President who allowed 9/11, Georgians loyal to the West are now back under Russian rule, just like in Stalin's time. Can a new Soviet Empire be far behind? The U.S. Navy hardly dares to go into the Black Sea. A U.S. Coast Guard boat loaded with relief supplies for the victims of the Russian invasion, our beleaguered Georgian allies, has run from the Red Fleet, sailing off for a safer port. NATO has been effectively been kicked out of one Eastern European country. Can Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, or the Ukraine be far behind?

A new Iron Curtain of fear and intimidation is already descending upon those former Soviet satellites, all thanks to George W. Bush and his surrogate, John Sidney McCain III. Bush & McCain's wild promises to the Georgians and others (which they had no intention of living up to), and the foolish Bush/ McCain provocations of the Russians (whom they did not have the stomach to fight) have led to a complete and possibly permanent loss of U.S. power and influence in the region. Bush & McCain started a game of chicken with Putin & Medvedev and they lost: Under the Republican Party, we are now the chickens, for the first time in our history.

Meanwhile, nuclear-missile-armed Islamic State Pakistan slips into chaos and out of U.S. influence. Afghanistan and Iraq are sick of the losing wars of Bush/ McCain. China is eclipsing the United States as a superpower, forcing us to back off on Burma and Tibet, the Uighers and the Mongols, Darfur and Zimbabwe. Our deal to control nukes in India is falling apart. North Korea has made fools of Bush/ McCain. No one in the world, it seems, respects or fears U.S. power any more, after eight long disastrous years of Bush/McCain.

The Democrats may be our only hope of restoring American power and influence. But first they will have to survive the traitorous, disloyal, unpatriotic attacks of the un-American Republicans. Are you starting to see who America's enemies are? I'll spell it out: Bush & McCain are America's worst enemies: All talk and no competent action. All bluster and no fight. All brag and no balls. And the world now knows it. You call that "strong on Defense"? Maybe you're a traitor, too. Or, as we now call them, a Republican.

' Russia moved its own naval forces to the Abkhaz port of Sukhumi, where they got a rapturous reception from Abkhaz leader Sergei Bagapsh, who downed a toast from an ornate drinking horn with Russian officers. On a visit to Ukraine, also seen as vulnerable to Russian intervention, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband stressed the West was not interested in a new Cold War and said President Dmitry Medvedev had "a big responsibility not to start one." However he also sounded a conciliatory note, saying it would be "counter-productive" to isolate Russia as it was too "enmeshed" in the world economy. Miliband was nonetheless lambasted by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reflecting sensitivities around Ukraine, which in trying to join NATO and is burdened by hosting the centuries-old base for Russia's Black Sea fleet at Sevastopol. '

This war was never about South Ossetia or Georgia. Moscow is using its invasion, prepared over years, to rebuild its empire, seize greater control of Europe’s energy supplies and punish those who believed democracy could flourish on its borders. Europe has reason to worry. Thankfully, most of the international community has condemned the invasion and confirmed their unwavering support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Our first duty is to highlight Russia’s Orwellian tactics. Moscow says it invaded Georgia to protect its citizens in South Ossetia. Over the past five years it cynically laid the groundwork for this pretence, by illegally distributing passports in South Ossetia and Ab­khazia, “manufacturing” Russian citizens to protect. The cynicism of Russia’s concern for ethnic minorities can be expressed in one word: Chechnya. '

About 45 minutes later, the White House issued a statement from President Bush, vacationing at his ranch in Crawford. He too condemned the Russian ploy, saying, "We expect Russia to live up to its international commitments." '
