REALITY: CHECK PLEASE!
THE MEDIA ARE NOT THE AUTHORS OF REALITY
I BELIEVE IT'S SOME ONE CALLED GOD, IN THE POPULAR MYTHOLOGY
Even If He's Dead, He Still Has More Believers Than The Media
Whatever the source of our quotidian reality -supernatural beings, natural laws, scientifically divined phenomena, pure randomness, whatever- it definitely ain't FoxNews. Or ABC or the BBC or NPR or Rush Limbaugh; nor Newsweek, Time, the Times of London, NY, LA or the Straits. The best they can do, for all their chattering, is comment on reality, and try to influence it after the fact (or our perception of it).
But when no one is paying any attention to them any more, they can have little or no influence. Newspapers and magazines are virtually dead. People under 40 in America simply don't read them. Most people over 40 are so set in their ways that no amount of propaganda can influence them, except in confirming their pre-conceived notions. Television news isn't doing much better, even the briefly popular cable news nets, and they are all in fatal decline.
The fact is that the Internet now puts raw information, unbiased in-depth analyses, historical facts and breaking news from actual witnesses -live on the scene- at everyone's disposal, instantaneously. We no longer need intrepid reporters to scour the globe for us. The globe is in our living rooms. If I want to know what's going on in Tibet or Timbuktu, Bogalusa or Bialystok, I can ask someone there. I can scan hundreds of sources worldwide in minutes, and glean actual facts before the corporate media get their hands on them. I don't need them any more.
More importantly, I don't want them any more. Nor do most people. The much-heralded 24 hour news cycle has simply led to burn-out: Burn-out of reporters and talking heads who are forced to beat every story to death for weeks on end, just to fill the time between commercials. In order to beat each other, the various news NewsNets go for shock and titillation, which don't last long. In the long run, the audience is burned out too, and winds up feeling sorry for the victims of the 'Nets.
Whether it's poor little Britney or big bad Obama, when the initial headlines lead nowhere, and the aim just seems to be victimization, people end up feeling and believing the opposite of whatever the NewsNets intended. The really revolting spectacle of overpaid talking heads ass-licking their corporate masters by unfairly attacking even the people we like, and with a sneer on their pancaked faces, it's just too much. It's them we hate now. The media are forever down below Congress and used car salesmen in the minds of most people.
Ironically, the Republicans recognized this a long time ago. Their endless attacks on the "Liberal Media" helped them to get royal fools elected. All the fools had to do was ignore the media, or use it for "foto-ops." I say "ironically" because now the Republicans have taken over much of the Media, and it's them we hate, and ignore.
Obama should do the same thing: Ignore the media. Mock and marginalize them. Use them for foto-ops. And let them chatter away. Every negative word they say about him will hurt them and help him, with the public. He will need a big attack dog or two to savage the media. But he himself should remain above it all, as the arch-fool Reagan did, with great success, for eight years
Everyone knew Reagan was a fool. But when the media tried to make a point of it, they generated sympathy for the old boob. His handlers wisely kept him out of it, using people like Ed Meese to counter any attacks. All Dutch the douche would say was "There you go again." Exactly what Obama should say. Let him find his own Ed Meese or Spiro Agnew to rip the Hannity's & Matthews to shreds. They deserve it.
Meanwhile, out here in reality, we can sit back and smile at it all. It's so bloody obvious, so ridiculous what's going on. We know that all we have to do is continue supporting Obama, and letting the Democratic Party know it. Without us, there is no party. That's reality. Obama will win the nomination. Obama will win the election in November. We will stay behind him, right behind him if necessary, to see that what he represents to us comes to pass: An end to the corporatist domination of America, and a return of power to the citizens of this country.
In the meantime, let's don't let the media freak us out. We have nothing to fear but fear itself, like the old crippled dude used to say. No matter what they say, we are winning. No matter what they say, they are losing. Don't let the media, or the Clinton lie-machine discourage or rattle you. The only way they can defeat us is if we defeat ourselves through loss of confidence. The antidote is a daily dose of reality. And that can only be found here, not on the NewsNets.
Here's some of their bullshit: Candidates' spin as headline news. Reality? NOT!

Great post, Cosa. I agree - Obama should use a surrogate as Reagan did, to do the "dirty work."
.
Yeah. He can't dirty himself, but he can't let the 'Pukes dirty him, either.
But who on the Dems' side would make a good attack-dog?
