Science Fiction From The "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" Gang


Eliza Dushku, Albanian-American, once swore that you were more likely to see God naked than her. No reports on the naked Almighty tonight, but Eliza appeared to appear naked several times on "Dollhouse." No actual visible naughty bits, but, like the adverts for the show, a fair amount of Albanian epidermis, a first for many of us non-Balkans.

The marketing for the new show has caused as much buzz as the show itself. The character Eliza plays has been compared to a hooker or an abused woman, and some see the actress herself as a whore or a sell-out for posing undraped in the ads. But Ms. Dushku is the co-author of a scholarly study on the condition of women in South Africa, and she is almost as feisty in person as her "Buffy" character, Faith, the anti-slayer who regularly kicked Buffy's ass. So, is she being exploited here, or exploiting herself?

Those who are familiar with Joss Whedon's work will know that he has an unique perspective on women among Hollywood writers and producers. He has created some of the most interesting female characters ever seen on television, or on the planet, or any other planet. Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Summers may not have started the trend in ass-kicking heroines, but she certainly redefined it. Alyson Hannigan's Willow Rosenberg on "Buffy" was one of TV's first teenage lesbian characters, and a witch; yet in no way a stereotype. Charisma Carpenter's Cordelia Chase and Amy Acker's Winifred 'Fred' Burkle on "Buffy" and the companion-series, "Angel," were central to both shows and carried plot lines all on their own. The ladies of the Buffyverse were the heroines, the main actors, the strong centers of their stories, not mere attachments or ornaments hung on the male characters, as in many adventure stories.

On Whedon's short-lived cult favorite "Firefly," we had a tough, cynical space cowgirl, a naive back-water lady spaceship mechanic, a super-powerful but brain-damaged kid-sister, and a glamourous and intellectual "companion." As on "Buffy" and "Angel," there were as many main female characters as male, and the girls took no sh*t from anybody. Anyone who watched these shows can tell you that Whedon regards women with awe and respect, whose love and friendship his male characters would, and frequently do, kill or die for. He is a romantic, but a post-romantic romantic. If he is exploiting anything, it is his own feelings for and thoughts about females, femininity and humanity.

Dushku is a producer and executive producer of "Dollhouse" along with Joss Whedon. If there are calculations being made as to whether and how to use her considerable natural sex-appeal to help sell the show, she is in on them. If it's coming down from the studio or the network, Eliza and Joss have little choice but to comply, after their last outings failed to get much of a chance from the suits to gain an audience. As tacky as some of the promo's for the show have been, I hope they work. Too many great sci-fi shows and show creators, from Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz ["X-Files," "Millenium," "Night Stalker," "Harsh Realm," "Lone Gunmen,"] to James Cameron ["Dark Angel," "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles"] have been shafted by Fox. Sadly, no other network seems willing to give S-F much of a try. So, if the suits wanna see some skin, show it. Besides, that Albanian skin is very nice.
