Worse Than Fiction, And It Happens Every Day
Yeah. I could make stuff up. Sure. But you wouldn't believe it, would you? Nah. I'll just let the world do it for me. Good old, crazy old world. Say, do you know of another world anywhere around here where a person could go to get away from all this? No, hunh? Yeah. It would be crowded with people looking to get away, wouldn't it? And then the sh*t would just start all over again. OK, whatevers. See you in the funny papers!
"NYC, Boston Could See Higher Sea Level Rise"
Well, on the postive side, Wall street will disappear first.
' New York, Boston, Halifax and other cities in the northeastern United States and Canada could come under greater threat from sea level rise due to melting of the Greenland ice sheet this century, a new study suggests. Greenland is the world's largest island, covering an area more than three times the size of Texas. Some 81 percent of it has been permanently capped by ice, with many glaciers that slowly move ice out sea. The new study, detailed in the May 29 issue of the journal Geophysical Research Letters, finds that if Greenland's ice melts at moderate to high rates, ocean circulation by 2100 may shift and cause sea levels off the northeast coast of North America to rise by about 12 to 20 inches (about 30 to 50 centimeters) more than in other coastal areas. "If the Greenland melt continues to accelerate, we could see significant impacts this century on the northeast U.S. coast from the resulting sea level rise," said study author Aixue Hu, of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). "Major northeastern cities are directly in the path of the greatest rise." '
"Green-glowing monkeys have green-glowing babies"
Have you tried the marmoset jellyfish?
' Japanese researchers have genetically engineered monkeys whose hair roots, skin and blood glow green under a special light, and who have passed on their traits to their offspring, the first time this has been achieved in a primate. They spliced a jellyfish gene into common marmosets, and said on Wednesday they hope to use their colony of glowing animals to study human Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. "Photos show rape and sex abuse in Iraq jails: report"
"America does not torture." We just rape you with truncheons. Just like a Skull & Bones initiation at Yale. Prob'ly where Bush got the idea. He LOVED it!
' "The mere depiction of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it." The newspaper said at least one picture showed an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee. Others are said to depict sexual assaults with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube. The photographs relate to 400 alleged cases of abuse carried out at Abu Ghraib and six other prisons between 2001 and 2005. '
"China-made children's products unsafe: state media"
Is saving a little money really worth exposing your kids to toxic waste? How 'bout shipping all our jobs and businesses to a crony-commie country? Hm? WTF???!!!
' Nearly half of the clothing and a third of the furniture made for children in China's top manufacturing province is unsafe, with many products containing harmful chemicals, state media said. The discovery was made in an official investigation by authorities in the southern province of Guangdong, the centre of China's manufactured export industry, the China Daily reported. It said just 53.5 percent of garments surveyed met safety standards, with many containing excess amounts of formaldehyde, a chemical that can cause skin or respiratory infections. As for children's furniture, 67.7 percent of it was deemed safe, with some of the questionable products containing too much formaldehyde or health-endangering heavy metals including lead, cadmium and chromium. "The main reason for the excessive content of formaldehyde and heavy metals is the use of substandard raw materials and paints," Lin Ruixi, spokesman for the province's product safety administration, was quoted as saying. Millions of toys made in China -- the world's largest producer of toys -- have been recalled globally in recent years amid fears they were made with toxic lead paints or had design flaws. '
"Woman Claims She Had an Affair With Carrie Prejean's Mom"
Gee, her Dad's gay, her Mom is a lesbian... Think Ms. Opposites has issues?
' That Miss California crown may be still firmly affixed to her head, but controversy won't stop swirling around Carrie Prejean and her family. Valerie Vetrano, an openly gay sales rep from Corona, Calif., claims she had a lesbian relationship with Prejean's mom, Francine Coppola. "I did date her," she told ABCNews.com Wednesday evening. "I'm not going to deny it, but I'm not going to say anything else." Vetrano, whose connection to Coppola was first reported by Star magazine, declined to comment on how long their relationship lasted but confirmed it ended "a couple weeks before Carrie Prejean was in the Miss USA competition." "Canada's Conference Board Found Plagiarizing Copyright Report"
Copying a report on copyright violations. Why not?
' "There is a storm brewing in Canada as the prestigious Conference Board of Canada has been caught plagiarizing US copyright lobby group documents in a report on copyright reform. The report was funded by the Canadian copyright lobby as well as by the Ontario government. The Conference Board has acknowledged some errors, but stands by the report, while the Ontario government admits spending thousands of dollars and it now wants some answers." '
"Clark Rockefeller to be known as ‘defendant’ in court"
Boy, those Rockefellers, hanh?
' The con man known internationally by a half dozen aliases - but mainly as Clark Rockefeller - will essentially have no name at his trial. A Suffolk Superior Court judge today ruled that Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter - living in the United States under the name Clark Rockefeller since 1983 - will simply be know as “the defendant.” Judge Frank Gaziano’s decision did not sit well with Rockefellers’s defense team, even though Gerhartsreiter, 48, a German national, is the name for which he was indicted on charges stemming from the July 27 kidnapping of his then 7-year-old daughter Reigh “Snooks” Boss during a supervised visit in the Back Bay while his ex-wife Sandra Boss of London waited at a Boston hotel. Defense attorney Timothy Bradl told Gaziano, “The court ought not get involved with who is this guy. It’s a needless level of prejudice.” '
"Arrest of young boys at school sparks outrage"
Their treatment, of course, had nothing to do with the fact that they were Arabs.
' Two French boys, aged six and 10, were arrested at school by half a dozen police officers and questioned for two hours over bicycle thefts, triggering public outrage. Politicians, teachers and parents said officers in the municipality of Floirac in southwestern France had overreacted to the situation, but the police maintain they acted correctly. The six-year-old confessed to taking one of the bikes, while the 10-year-old, his cousin, was still being investigated, departmental security director Albert Doutre told a press conference. In the incident, which took place Tuesday but was only made public Thursday, police waited for the two pupils in front of the school's entrance after the mother of another child reported she had seen them on stolen bikes, witnesses said. "They could have talked to the family instead of waiting for 200 children to come out of the school to arrest two ... schoolboys in front of their little friends," said the school's headmaster, Olivier Billand. Police first stopped the older boy and bundled him into one of the cars together with his bike, then waited for the younger one and did the same with him, said the older boy's mother, Aicha Ouachim. Her son now refuses to go to school, she said. '
"Nudity complaint near Maine topless doughnut shop"
Topless outside the donut shop. Wonder how the COPS found out?
' Prosecutors will review a complaint that a waitress from a Maine topless doughnut shop was outside the business without a shirt on. The Central Maine Morning Sentinel says a state trooper was sent to the Grand View Topless Coffee shop on Saturday after someone called in a complaint. Police say no one was charged, but the matter has been turned over to the district attorney for review. It's unclear whether nudity outside the cafe is prohibited. '
"Police find feral girl in Siberia"
I think I KNOW this bitch!
' Russian police have taken into care a 5-year-old girl who has been shut up in a flat in the company of cats and dogs for her entire life, police said on Wednesday. The girl, who lived in the Eastern Siberian city of Chita, could not speak Russian and acted like an dog when police took her into care. "For five years, the girl was 'brought up' by several dogs and cats and had never been outside," a police statement said. "The unwashed girl was dressed in filthy clothes, had the clear attributes of an animal and jumped at people," it said. The flat had no heat, water or sewage system. A police spokeswoman said the girl, known as Natasha, is being monitored by psychologists in an orphanage. Her mother was being questioned but her father has not been found yet. She appears to be about 2-years-old, though her real age is five, refuses to eat with a spoon and has taken on many of the gestures of the animals with which she lived, police said. "When carers leave the room, the girl jumps at the door and barks," the police said. '
"Genes of 'Bearded Lady' Revealed"
Nope. Didn't know her.
' Julia Pastrana became famous as the "bearded lady" in the mid-1800s. Now, more than 150 years later, scientists have discovered the genetic mutations responsible for her rare condition. The disorder, known as congenital generalized hypertrichosis terminalis (CGHT) with gingival hypertrophy, is characterized by excessive growth of dark hairs all over the body, distorted facial features, and enlarged gums. In some cases, people can have CGHT with normal gums. All of these diseases fall into a group of conditions called congenital generalized hypertrichosis (CGH). The disease is difficult to study because it is so rare. '.
