THE CAPITOL CITY'S BOININ'

OK, NOW It's Another Vietnam...

During the war, a number of Buddhists set themselves on fire, in Vietnam. I remember seeing it on TV, though that seems unlikely, now. Family hour, and all that. Anyway, somehow, it really stuck in my mind, that image.

Calm, cool collected monks, sitting in the lotus position, doused themselves in gasoline, and lit a match. Or a Zippo, I don't know. Anyway, they just sat there and roasted alive. No screaming. Discipline. Dedication. To something. We didn't quite know what.

I think they were protesting the war, or our involvement in it. Don't really know. But the impression they left was of a man on fire, for his country. It was so utterly alien to my American mind. To all of our American minds. No American would ever do such a thing.

All I could think was, wow. Something is happening here. What is ain't exactly clear. But these people are dedicated. To something. And they REALLY don't want us there, in their weird, alien country. That they're willing to die for, to burn themselves alive for, to keep us out. That was the message, all right. We shoulda listened.

So, now some guy has torched himself at the White House. Right out front. Something about Allah. That's Muslim for God. That's all we know. Except, we have all been here, before. They do stuff like this all the time, you know, in the Middle East. Blow themselves up, for the Cause. Whatever it is. We don't quite know. Now, they're doing here.

You know, those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. And repeat it. And repeat it.

So, what's Hell? Burning alive? Or doing the same wrong thing, over, and over, and over again?
