Conventional Wisdom, that idiot, states that, once they're done with the partisan Primary orgy of back-stabbing, back-scratching, kissing up to special interests, and trying to be the very modern model of the Party's perfect candidate, the Presidential candidates must shift back toward the middle of our one-sided political spectrum.

Bushwa. In fact, this "middle" is so far right of the real center of politics that it alienates a full sixty percent of the total electorate, quadrennially. The Parties' Faithful, a mere twenty-odd percent on each side, continue to march in lockstep behind the survivors of the Primaries. They alone are rewarded with candidates who think like them, or claim to. By a bare margin of a percentage point or three, half of these True Believers and Party hacks will get their very own representative in the White House. (Or not. I mean, they all pretty much represent their real meal-tickets after the election.) The other half get bupkis.

So, nearly eighty percent of us will come away unrepresented by this process of pure partisanship and "moving towards The Middle." Our concerns will never be raised. Our issues will never be answered. Our taxes will go toward things we simply do not want, while things we desperately need go unfunded. Whatever happened to "No taxation without representation"? Is this any way to run a democracy?

That question will never be raised by our self-styled representatives in the Fourth Estate. The Press, in fact, make every effort to support the process of churning out more status quo every four years. They actually banned candidates from debates, both "Left" and "Right" this year. And the higher Courts, bastions of Business As Usual, let it happen.

Let's face it, by "the Middle," they mean the place where nothing every really happens. It doesn't matter if you're a holy-rolling Right-To-Lifer, an Anti-Tax-And-Spender, a Medicine-Socializer or a Gay-Marrier: There will be no major changes of any kind, ever, in this Null Space, "the Middle." Hey, if you were born rich, powerful, smug and self-satisfied, would you want things to be different? And if you'd spent your whole life sucking up to succeed, what would you ever want to change? Any change at all might upset your apple-cart. So no change will be tolerated, much less advocated, or even mentioned. Not in our Presidential campaigns.

Even in this year when the vast majority of people are screaming for change, all we get is lip-service. A few candidates are claiming to be agents of change. But no specifics are given. No programs or strategies to get them implemented. Just a little talk. Talk we've all heard before, again and again, for many, many, many years. Talk that's easily forgotten once in the Oval Office, with all its' "awesome responsibilities," which seem to preclude any action on behalf of the vast majority of people in this country.

So, what's it all for? Why bother with this democratic dog and pony show at all? Most people will simply ignore it anyway. It reminds me of the show-trials in the Soviet Union, where they would pretend to give due process to someone they'd already found guilty of free thought, drinking Coca-Cola or inept political infighting. And then they'd hang the poor bastard, as they'd intended all along. But why the show? Did they actually care what the world thought? Do we?

When the overwhelming majority of our citizens flat refuse to participate, or even follow this Presidential beauty pageant, what is the point of it, any more? If no one supports it, how can anyone claim legitimacy from the results? In a "democratic" election, isn't sixty percent a pretty clear mandate for None Of The Above? What the Hell are they pretending to, these politicians? They're no more legitimate than some bastard usurper trying to claim proper descendence from a true King. It's Bushwa.

The problem is, we actually support these bastards by refusing to do anything about them. In this new passive-aggressive democracy, silence equals consent, and consent equals a mandate to do absolutely anything. By failing to rise up and rebel against this travesty, by sitting idly by while it gets repeated every four years, we are, in effect, legitimizing it. And it's not just the usual boondoggles.

Now we are legitimizing unprovoked attacks on civilian populations, occupations of other sovereign nations without any real justification or positive result, mass murder, wholesale theft and fraud against other countries' wealth as well as our own, violation of all our most basic laws and principles, and gross acts of inhumanity against innocent strangers based solely on their race, religion, geography and politics, an historic breach of international human rights and war crimes treaties.

I still believe we are a democracy, in more than name. I remain convinced that the American political system is the best in the history of the world. I am dead certain that if a majority of the population took an active role in this system, we could take back our country, and make it work for us. I know in my heart that there is still time, still a chance, still enough wisdom, energy, strength, courage and goodness in ourselves to make America the country it truly is, or should be.

I know that if we do not, we are already headed toward becoming a truly evil force in world history. There is just too much wealth, power and expertise concentrated here to be safely left in the hands of a dubious minority representing no one but themselves. We simple cannot afford to be Good Germans here. Achtung, Baby:
