TSUNAMI: WEEK THREE

POLITICS REARS ITS' UGLY HEAD

As The Victims Go On Suffering

In Indonesia, the Army blocked relief convoys. They didn't want the Aceh rebels to get any food, or credit for delivering it. In Sri Lanka, the government took advantage of the tsunami and ensuing chaos to attack the Tamil Tigers, while withholding aid from the area. The Maldives are getting little or no aid, though the whole country was devastated, because not ENOUGH people died. Likewise the Chagos Archipelago.

Thailand is trying to pretend the tsunami never happened. It might upset the touristas, and the tourist "industry." Bangladesh, well, they've had their concert already, haven't they? Burma was never really heard from; the Generals prefer to keep shutting out the world. Malaysia's concerned that some hungry victims may be trying to get too much food, so nobody gets any till the paperwork is sorted out. India insists on doing things its' own, messed up ways.

Meanwhile, Africa is, as usual, getting nada, despite the deaths and destruction in Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion, Mayotte, the Comoros and the Seychelles. Corporate giving is up, perhaps at the expense of other causes, which could hurt Africa, even more. And no one knows how long the generousity will hold out, or even if the promises will materialize at all...

Meanwhile, other agendas are moving in. The US Navy has "other missions," so the ships can't stay on station much longer, according to US Secretary of State Colin Powell. The French leap in to suggest major debt relief for the affected nations, forcing one to wonder who owes whom the most.

The UN is just trying to do its job, but no one can ever seem to agree on exactly what that is. Christian relief organizations are beating the bushes with their Bibles. Muslim fundamentalists in the area object, violently. Then there's the phony charity scams... And I think to myself... What a wonderful world!
