America's First Polynesian Major-City Mayor?

Yes. Believe it or not, Honolulu, Hawaii, hasn't had an Hawaiian mayor in fifty years. Fifty years ago, Honolulu was not a major U.S. city. Hawaii wasn't even a State, in fact. Now our first Post-War Polynesian CEO is Samoan. So, that should tell you something about Hawaiians in politics, and politics in Hawaii.

My suspicion is, if a Hawaiian ran for anything big, another Hawaiian or two, or ten, would split the vote against him, or her. As a member of a disorganized race myself, I can understand this. Why should I vote for you when my cousin is running? Well, after losing their own country with this sort of politics, the Irish got party discipline in America. The Hawaiians didn't.

So, Mufi Hannemann, Samoan-At-Large, is our first Pacific-Islander-In-Charge since Statehood. We don't know much about him: Our mayoral elections are "non-partisan," so, stealthy. Mufi's served under Republicans and Democrats, nationally and locally. He was endorsed by business and labor groups. His platform was pretty much identical to his rival's in the mayoral election: Previous Mayor BAD! Next mayor BETTER! Tear down all the old guy's stuff, start building new stuff: War Memorial Natatorium out, Bus Rapid Transit System out, Waikiki Beautification out.

Not sure what's in. Hence the pig in the poke. But, who knows, da braddah could be bringing pig & poke (ceviche) to the luau. All we really know about him is his impressive resume, and his belligerent record as a City Councilman. So. He took office today. Now we find out, yeah?
