Well, he hung in there till the very last minute, plugging away for stem-cell research and help for victims of spinal-chord injuries, but the actor formerly known as Kal-El of the planet Krypton, Clark Kent of Smallville, and Superman of Metropolis, Christopher Reeve, has died.

Paralysed from the neck down nine years ago by a spinal-chord injury suffered in a fall from his horse while show-jumping, Reeve overcame urges to suicide and came back to fight for a cause. He managed to put a super-human face on an issue the Bushies would rather have demonized, Fundamentalist-style.

Many of us might not have made it as far, and as long as he did, in or out of a wheelchair. But the man who put the mensch in the red yellow and blue suit with the big red "S" turned out to be a real man of steel, fighting for "truth, justice, and the American way," in spite of Bush and his so-called Christian backers. Up, up and away, superdude!
