VOTE FOR A NEW NATIONAL ANTHEM
FOURTH OF JULY 2009: TIME WE
REPLACED THAT OLD TURKEY TUNE
WHAT DOES INDEPENDENCE DAY REALLY MEAN?
We Need Something That Expresses The True Spirit Of America, Something That Rocks!
We always hated that stupid German drinking song. It's impossible to sing, or remember all the words. Here we are, the most musical country in the history of the universe, and our national freakin' anthem is a hand-me-down from the never-musical Brits. And the words! It's a celebration of war, and one we lost, at that! Might as well sing about 9/11 at the start of ever baseball game.
So here's our nominations for a new American National Anthem: It's got to rock, it's got to have soul, and it's got to mean something. Feel free to nominate your own candidate, and we'll take it to a cigar-smoke-filled room and run it by the powers that be. We'll let ya know.

You do realize that "Revolution" by the Beatles is an anti-revolution song, on balance, though more specifically aimed at particular kinds of New Left "revolutionaries" in the late '60s like the ones who wrecked SDS?
Also, "America the Beautiful" is the name of the song you call "My Country 'tis of thee" -- and that the tune is that of "God Save the Queen" and several other European national anthem. (This is a perennial favorite among people suggesting a new anthem btw).
Other suggesions:
"Solidarity Forever"
Agree with "This Land is Your Land," though remember everyone sings so no particular version.
(Singabiity may point to folk songs, a lot of "rockin' " songs will be as hard as Star Spangled... that's the problem w/ Born to Run which I would prefer over Born in the U.S.A. from Springsteen)
"Tis a Gift to be Simple" (peace-oriented version, not awful military dirge used by CBS a lot)
(Singability problems: La Bamba, Do Ya Wanna Dance, Wooly Bully, Louie Louie)
"Oh Freedom"
"Rock Island Line"
"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime"
.
"It's got to rock, it's got to have soul, and it's got to mean something."
To Americans under 60, preferably.
