Then they said they could contact him, but still didn't know where he was. Then they said he was, get this, HIKING on the Appalachian Trail! How stupid are Southrons, anyhoo, that the Guv's lackeys thought they'd believe that? Next, the wayward CEO resurfaced after his SUV was spotted at the Atlanta airport. ' A watchdog group alleged Wednesday that Sen. John Ensign violated the Senate's ethics rules by engaging in an affair with a campaign aide who was married to his administrative assistant, then terminating their employment. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington also said Ensign, R-Nev., violated ethics and campaign finance rules by failing to report a severance payment to the woman as an in-kind contribution from his campaign or leadership political action committee. Ensign acknowledged last week that he had a consensual affair with a campaign staffer from December 2007 through August 2008. The group followed through Wednesday on an earlier announcement that it would be filing a complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee. While Ensign stressed the word consensual in his disclosure, Melanie Sloan, executive director of the watchdog group, said the ethics committee needs to investigate whether sexual harassment had occurred. She said it's well established that sexual harassment is a form of discrimination that Senate rules don't allow. Sloan also said that payments to the couple involved, Doug and Cynthia Hampton, merited investigation. '

In a public confession among a pool of reporters and photographers at the statehouse, Sanford admitted to seeing the Argentine woman, known only as "Maria," three times over their yearlong affair. Kara Borie, spokeswoman for the South Carolina Department of Commerce, confirmed Thursday afternoon taxpayer money was used to fund a Brazil trade and investment mission in which Sanford was present for on June 21-28, 2008. "A number of the participants from the Brazil trade and investment mission, at the invitation and suggestion of Secretary Taylor and at their own personal expense, went to Cordoba, Argentina, following the Brazil mission to go bird hunting," Borie added. '

This is all trivial compared to Republican culpability in Iraq, Afghan and Pakistan war crimes, the ruin of the world economy and the looting of the US Treasury, the breakdown in the American public health system, chronic systemic homelessness, massive unemployment, transportation gridlock. John Ensign was being paid by the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the relationship, federal election records show. Brandon Hampton, who shares an address with former Ensign staffers Doug and Cynthia Hampton, was paid $5,400 between March 2008 and August 2008. The payments, for "research policy consulting," ended the same month as the affair, which was said to begin in December 2007. Ensign staffers and committee officials did not return calls seeking comment. Doug Hampton had worked for Ensign as an administrative assistant, earning more than $144,000 in fiscal 2007 and about $101,000 in fiscal 2008. While working for Ensign's Battle Born PAC, Cynthia Hampton made nearly $700 per pay period for much of 2007. In February 2008, that doubled to almost $1,400. Both Doug and Cynthia Hampton stopped working for Ensign by May 2008. A housekeeper who answered the door Wednesday at their Las Vegas home said they had left for the day. '

' For the first time since Senator John Ensign announced his extramarital affair, we're hearing from the couple on the other side of it. They're speaking through an attorney, after Ensign spoke at a press conference. Ensign announced Wednesday that he had the consensual affair last year with a campaign staffer whose family was close with his. Her attorney later confirmed that his client, Cindy Hampton, is that woman. He would only say it's a very personal matter, especially after the Hampton's did everything possible to keep the matter private. "The fact that he canceled his appointments in Washington, jetted home and made this announcement indicates to me that something other than 2012 political considerations," said Chuck Muth, a political commentator for Action News. Muth says it's possible the Hampton's were going to go public, forcing Ensign to act first. He also says the admission may not hamper Ensign's future as a senator. "Unless there's something else, other fallout from this, I don't think it's going to harm his re-election chances," said Muth. The Hampton's attorney added only one more point after the statement. He says the couple will be ready and willing to tell their side of the story at some point in the future. '

That means during March and April 2008, three members of the Hampton family were working for Ensign. Both Doug and Cynthia Hampton stopped working for Ensign at the end of April 2008. According to people familiar with the matter, Ensign’s affair with Hampton took place between December 2007 and August 2008. A trusted political aide, Cynthia Hampton served as the treasurer for both Ensign’s reelection campaign and for his leadership fund, Battle Born PAC. She received $10,620 through the Battle Born PAC during January to April 2008 – a pay rate that was far higher during that four-month period than the $11,767 she received from the committee during all of 2007. Cynthia Hampton was also paid $11, 912 by Ensign’s reelection campaign between Jan. 2007 and April 2008, with her monthly salary doubling later in the year. According to Senate payroll records, Doug Hampton served as Ensign’s administrative assistant in his personal office from November 2006 to May 2008, departing around the same time Cynthia Hampton left Ensign’s political committees. After leaving Ensign’s office, Doug Hampton went to work for a Las Vegas political consulting firm called November Inc. which is run by several former Ensign aides. Doug Hampton was paid about $101,000 for seven months of work in fiscal 2008 – a higher monthly rate than he was previously paid. He made $144,000 in all of 2007. '

Even more embarrassing was the wording of Ensign's comments about Craig. "But if I was in a position like that, that's what I would do [resign]." Needless to say, Ensign has no intention of resigning. In fact, until the affair surfaced, Ensign seemed like he was succumbing to the other addiction that overcomes obscure middle-aged senators – an opium-like fantasy that he could be president. Just two weeks ago, Ensign stopped off to give a speech to a conservative group in Iowa, which coincidentally enough is the first caucus state. As Ensign's press secretary said at the time, "He's very focused on Nevada. But what this trip means is it's a conversation about the future of the Republican Party." '

Apparently, there is no one else in the whole country who can be depended upon to defend us from the imminent danger posed by destroying somebody else's country for no reason, six thousand miles away. Unh-hunh. So they just had to drag Mrs. Soldier back to Fort Benning, despite all her appeals for clemency. Convicted murderers get more consideration from the system.

See, the thing is, none of those conservative Republican blow-hards wants to go fight the wars they start. Like Dubya and Dick, Gingrich and Armey, they're much too busy and far too valuable serving their country at the Chicago Board of Trade or the New York Stock Exchange or in the Awl Bidness or Warshenden DEE-cee to waste their time or their blood defending their country. Besides, that's what poor people are for. And now the Middle Class, too.

Seven years in, Obama says, "Oops, my bad, we're not leaving after all." In fact, we're staying in Iraq, doubling our forces in the black hole of Afghanistan, and bullying our way into Pakistan on the sly, too. So we're going to be needing every last Mommy to stand in for those loud but cowardly Republican males hiding in the business districts.

Of course, with the Republicans putting the whole world economy in the sh*tter, and doing their goddamnedest to keep it there, there should be lots more economic draftees pretty soon. Millions of people have lost their jobs, and millions more will lose theirs before the Bush Depression is over. That's your ideal cannon-fodder, right there. Recruiters say business is picking up for them, after a few slow years when everybody realized the war was bullsh*t, nothing to do with Osama, 9/11 or WMDs. I mean, even a right-tard doesn't want to die for oil, right? But he might have to take a chance on dying to keep his family fed. Or to satisfy a stop-loss order.

Well, apparently, the economy isn't getting bad enough fast enough for the Generals. They're still using the "unlimited commitment" in the fine print of everybody's enlistment contracts to keep dragging our citizen-soldiers back into the worst Hell-holes on Earth. In the past, this meant Daddy was going to be away for a while, and he might not come home. Now it means Mommy might not come home, either. Does anyone care?

"NC military mom arrives at Fort Benning with kids"

' A North Carolina mother who reported for Army duty with her two young children in tow is waiting to see what happens next. Lisa Pagan, who was recalled to the Army four years after being honorably discharged, drove nearly 400 miles and braved a Southeastern winter storm to report for duty Sunday at Fort Benning, Ga. She says she has no one to take care of son Eric and daughter Elizabeth, so she brought them with her. She has reserved a motel room for a week and doesn't plan to stay in the barracks. "Them being away from me is not an option," she said. Master Sgt. Keith O'Donnell, an Army spokesman in St. Louis, said earlier that the commander at Fort Benning will decide how to handle the situation. "The Army tries to look at the whole picture and they definitely don't want to do anything that jeopardizes the family or jeopardizes the children," O'Donnell said. "At the same time, these are individuals who made obligations and commitments to the country." '
